The famous Merthyr fighter and coach Born in Collier's Row, Merthyr in 1926, Eddie Thomas was raised on tales of famous boxers like Tommy Farr, Jimmy Wilde and Jim Driscoll. In 1943 he started boxing in the gym. In 1946 he won the ABA lightweight title and then turned professional. Of his 48 fights, he won 40, lost six and drew two. Later, he trained world champion Howard Winstone, and in 1992 he was given the freedom of the Borough of Merthyr. He died in 1997.
