The renowned singer from Llanelli In her day, the singer Dorothy Squires was a truly glamorous figure. Born Edna May Squires in Pontyberem near Llanelli in 1915, she got her break thanks to band leader and composer Billy Read. She joined his Accordion Band when she was just 18 and stayed for more than a decade; along the way, the two became joint owners of the Llanelli Astoria Theatre. By 1953 she was Mrs Roger Moore, wife of the man who would become James Bond. But the marriage didn't last, bankruptcy followed, and Squires was rescued thanks only to a rent-free home in Trebanog, mid-Glamorgan, provided by a lifelong fan. She died of lung cancer in 1998.
