The party's first parliamentary victory From 1957, the parliamentary seat of Camarthen was a solid Labour stronghold with Megan Lloyd George as its Member of Parliament. At the time of her death in 1966, she held the seat with a majority of 9,233 votes. It made the by-election victory by Gwynfor Evans, President of Plaid Cymru, all the more striking: he walked away with a majority of 2,436. It was Plaid Cymru's first seat in the House of Commons.
