Fire blazes over the Menai Straits Disaster struck over the Menai Straits on 23 May 1970, when a bunch of five teenagers inadvertantly set the Britannia Bridge alight while playing with flames near some paper. As the roof of the bridge was made of wood the fire caught quickly. For nine hours, it blazed; spectators watched as the fire brigade fought desperately with the flames. Robert Stephenson's bridge, which had stood for 120 years, was virtually destroyed in a single night, severing Anglesey's one link with the mainland. A new bridge was opened in 1972.
