Wynford Vaughan Thomas reports from a Lancaster Bomber under heavy fire On the night of 3 September 1943, Wynford Vaughan Thomas (1908 to 1987) broadcast for the BBC from a Lancaster Bomber during the F for Freddie raid over Berlin. As well as this famous recording in which the crew shoot down a German bomber, Vaughan Thomas reported the Anzio landings and Montgomery's crossing of the Rhine. And the story goes that in Hamburg, he filed his story from a studio used by the traitor William Joyce (Lord Haw Haw), with Joyce's script and a bottle of gin still lying on the desk before him.
