Sun, wind and rain all made appearances but between them - Manorbier and Freshwater West delivered the goods. The Welsh National Championships held between 3-5 May 2003, began at
Freshwater West on Saturday in 2-3 foot surf with a howling sw wind. The first rounds of the Cadets went ahead and the finals of the Youth and Grommet divisions were finished. Unfortunately due to the strength of the wind, the competition finished earlier than expected and plans to run anything else that day were abandoned.
On Sunday the surf was around 4-6 feet and the first round of the Open competition went ahead. Due to the big swell and the dropping tide, the judges were unable to see the competitors so the event was moved to a more sheltered beach at
Manorbier where conditions were around 2-3 foot and choppy. The Cadets, Open Bodyboard, Junior Bodyboard, Junior Longboard and Junior Girls were all finished.
By Monday the swell had dropped and although it was still a solid 3-4ft and windy, the contest was moved and completed at Freshwater West, finishing up around 17.30.
There were many standout performances throughout the weekend apart from the finals and some of those deserving a mention are Gemma Harris in the Open Bodyboard.
Colm Garrett, Nick Swinnerton, Craig Aubrey and Mark Vaughan in the Men's Open and Craig Bright and Glen Welsh in the Cadets.
