Risso's Dolphin by Alison Gill

Risso's Dolphin

Grampus Griseus

Risso's dolphins inhabit all seas, but prefer temperate waters. Risso's dolphins have stocky heads without a beak and are light grey to white with a white chin and extensive scarring. The dorsal fin is shark-like.

Risso's dolphins live in schools of 3-50 individuals and are often in the company of other cetaceans. They have a body length of 2.6-3.8m and weigh 300-500kg and feed on squid and fish.

Richard Becker frim Elk, CA
I was kayaking a mile from shore when we spotted a pack of 25 Risso dolphins on August 19 2006. I have never seen them here before.

Bob Perry from Malibu California
We followed a school of Risso's that had 8 or 10 individuals for about a half hour. 8 nm south of Anacapa Island Southern California Bight June 06, 2006 On board the vessel 'Vagabond' out of Channel Islands Harbor.

Pete from San Diego, in La Jolla Cove
9/8/05 While swimming in La Jolla Cove, in about 15 ft. of water, I saw a thick tail section and large fluke fin directly under me. I did not see the dorsil fin. Upon researching, I came to the conclusion it was a Risso's Dolphin. The tail section was very thick and powerful, grey, with white scarring. It was moving smooth at a slower speed with its tail moving up and down. It was larger than a bottlenose dolphin, which are often seen surfing in the Southern California coast. A very impressive sight!

Nina Sassano from Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey
Tonight, June 21st, 2005, a group of my co-workers from the Jenkenson's Aquarium of Point Pleasant Beach were doing a horseshoe crab survey at Higby's Beach in Cape May, New Jersey. As we were walking down the beach I saw a Rissos dolphin on it's side in the water. We immediately called for help and brought it back to life, keeping constant water on it and making sure it was safe and was breathing normally. Finally, a marine mammal stranding center came to take care of the dolphin. It was a surreal expierence.
