A local history site which features an 1876 map of the borough, information on tythes, the Silures, information on old local chapels and churches, merchant seamen, beer sellers, traders, the Irish community and more.

Aberavon and District Photographic Website

A very good collection of black and white photographs of Port Talbot. The site is the work of Dave Mitchell.

Historic Racing in Wales

This new site offers an excellent selection of photographs taken at motor bike races in South Wales during the 1920's - 1930's. Race sites included are Cefn Sidan, Aberavon and Oxwich Bay.

Digging Up The Past

This site describes itself as a "photographic archive of the South Wales coalfield."
You choose which category you're interested in and then view the related photographs. There's also information on the South Wales Miners Museum at Afan Argoed Country Park.


Silver Dragons

Interested in motorcyle history? Then take a look at this site which covers Britain's largest mainland mountain circuit which was on the Eppynt Mountain. Races were held there regularly from 1948 to 1953, organised jointly by the Motor Clubs of Carmarthen and Builth Wells.

National Library of Wales

The official site of the National Library based in Aberystwyth, with an extensive range of online resources to complement the vast array of documents and books in the library itself. Since 1911 the library has collected a copy of every printed work published in Britain and Ireland.


Friends Of Carmarthen County Museum

The society has a wealth of material on offer on topics big and small, from emigrations and gypsies to elections and lead mining. You'll also find details of their events, to which non-members are welcome.


Llanelli Historical Society

Find out about the group, its objectives, how to join and what work they're up to at the moment. There's also a sample of some of the fruits of their labours, such as a fascinating article on 'When Men First Set Foot in Llanelli'.


Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Wales

According to the site, the RCAHMW "surveys, interprets and records the built heritage of Wales, either directly or through grant aid and partnerships, and makes information available to the public through the National Monuments Record of Wales archive and information service." It's an extensive site with information on their many current projects, articles and images, and ways to get involved.


CADW

Cadw, which means 'to keep', are responsible for 'protecting, conserving and promoting' Wales' built heritage, and on this site there's a wide array of resources and articles in an easy-to-navigate layout. Created in 1984, Cadw carry out their duties on behalf of the National Assembly for Wales, and on the site you can get involved in their activities, check the events calendar, and view their publications.


Haverfordwest Town Museum

An extensive site to accompany the museum, detailing both their work and the town's rich history. You'll find sections dedicated to Religious, Industrial, Civic and People's history.


Gathering The Jewels

A major project that gathers some of the "jewels" from the collections of virtually every library, museum and archive in Wales. You'll find artefacts, documents, photographs and more, illustrating Welsh life from the earliest times to the recent past. There's also a comprehensive links section. A great start to any historical web journey with a clear, easy-to-use layout.


South Wales Coalfield Collection

Established in 1969, The South Wales Coalfield Collection (SWCC) uses a variety of media to in give an insight into the experience of the South Wales Valleys during a period of industrial turmoil. It looks at the time, using a wide variety of sources, from both an institutional and personal perspective. The site is clearly designed and easy to use, with a variety of manuscripts and audio-video materials. There are records relating to trade, miners' institutes, co-operative societies, and people connected with the mining community.


Hanes Emlyn - Newcastle Emlyn History

The local history society's own site, this remains incomplete at the time of writing but is already a great way to find out about the area. There's information on the town, the industry, the Teifi and the people of the area. There's also information on the society and its work.
