Black History Month was first celebrated in 1987, when it emerged as part of the African Jubilee Year Marcus Garvey celebrations. Here's our guide to some great sites dedicated to diversity and multicultural matters in SW Wales and beyond. If we're missing a site, let us know!
Black and Ethnic Minority Support Team BEST has been formed with the aim of providing support to Black Minority Ethnic communities and organisations within the scope of the Communities First Programme. Funded by the Welsh Assembly, the whole ethos of BEST is to work in partnership to enable BME communities to develop the skills and resources they need to make meaningful and sustained change in their lives.

Pogus Caesar Gallery Site suggested by Emma Jeffares of Birmingham. This excellent site promotes black art.The gallery covers the work of multi-media artist Pogus Caesar, with rare photographs, photomontages etc.

Black Information Link One of the major networking sites for Britain's Black and Ethnic Minority Communities. It features a special section on Stephen Lawrence, along with a range of other reports and publications. The site has an emphasis on interactivity, and members are invited to post their comments onto it.

Commission for Racial Equality Discover what Black History Month is all about here. The site looks at the contribution of ethnic minority communities to Britain, and you can also trace the history of immigration to Britain.
Website:www.cre.gov.uk.ethdiv/bhm.html The Kafel Centre Kafel is a voluntary charity working with Swansea's Muslim ethnic minority communities, taking its name from an Arabic word meaning 'to nurture'. The site details future plans for the Kafel Centre, which it is hoped will be of particular use to the most vulnerable and neglected sections of the community.

It offers courses and workshops in improvisation, African rhythm, bhangra, small group work, the collection of oral history and roots. Current research work covers the socio-cultural history of African American Music in Wales from the 19th century. The site is part of Channel 4's Black and Asian History Map.
