Hello Sailor

Sara tells us a spooky seaside tale from Llangrannog...

Whilst taking a break with my family in the remote seaside village of Llangrannog I had a very spooky encounter."

"Late at night whilst walking along the beach alone to find my beach towel, I saw a person standing by the sea. I thought nothing of it until I saw he was wearing an old-fashioned sailor suit! He stood there glaring into the sea and I turned my back for one split second to pick up my towel and when I looked behind me he had gone!

"I went back and I told the people at the local cafe this story and they said "Oh it's only Huw Pugh". Huw Pugh was a sailor who died in the area back in the 18th century. Many people in the area have experienced encounters like mine too."

It's amazing to think people are still telling the legend of the Black Nun - I wonder how long that story has been going around? I remember going to Glan Llyn twenty some years ago, and being scared of the nun - hearing weird noises and playing 'tricks' on each other during a school trip. But I can't remember the actual legend, does anyone know it?

The Black Nun's tales aren't true.I went to Llangrannog when I was 11 and nothing unusual happened, if it was a dangerous place as kids say then we wouldn't be taken there by our primary schools.

The writing and carving on the beds are done by people trying to scare you and the funniest thing is you believe it. That's why they keep doing it. Also for people who claim to hear banging on the walls think about it, who's staying in the room next to yours? The school joker maybe?

Put your ear on the wall and you'll probably be able to hear them laughing as your screaming with fright. Stop believing then you wont get kept up in the night by noises from people trying to scare you and also noises in your head. If you believe strongly that something's there then your going to hear noises, it's your mind playing tricks on you.

I am 12 years old and have been to Llangranog two times so far in my life and the black nun is NOT real! The strange noises are other other people playing tricks on you, or it is your mind at work, so dont go believing it...

The dark shadow thing mentioned in Bob and Norman's post above happened to me and my mate. We were hiding behind the bunk beds at the back of the room. A shadow definitely passed over the beds in front of us, although we didn't hear anything to suggest anyone had approached or entered the room, it felt weird for a second, we looked round the corner and nothing was there - this is exactly how it happened no exaggeration I swear!

The Black Nun is not REAL because I went to Glan-Llyn and there was not a single sound while we were there. It must be people playing tricks on you.

I am so glad that the Black Nun still terrifies and haunts the dreams of Gwersyllyr'r Urdd today. I was first scared out of my skin by her in 1981 (although NONE of us saw ANYTHING) and the fact that nothing has changed gives me hope that the overactive imaginations of young Welsh children will always dream up more interesting terrors than us mere adults can ever think up!

I'm going to Llangranog soon with my school. Because of this people have been talking about the Black Nun. The teachers say she isn't real. So please tell me if its true or not. I want to prove the teachers wrong!

I went to Llangranog with my school and in my room me and a few of the girls took a photo. At the back of the photo was a strange girl with a black bob. We were all terrified so ran out of the room. We came back to find a load of stuff in our suitcases. There were new messages carved into our beds and everyone knew that it was true. The only people that didn't believe us were the teachers, but what could we do. Watch out room five Llangranog.

I went to Llangrannog camp about 23 years ago and all the stories about a black nun was going on then. Half of it was in our imaginations. My son has just gone and I can't wait for him to tell me his stories.

I'm not someone to say "No, it's not real", but face it the teachers wouldn't take us somewhere dangerous so if there's anyone going there don't worry.

Last weekend we both visited Llangranog. We went for a midnight walk down the beach when we heared unusual noises and screams. We thought we'd better go back to our dormatories so we did. When we got to the door it was locked. We hit the door and kicked it...it didn't work. Whatever we did we couldn't force it open. We turned around and saw a dark shadow and all of a sudden the door flung open. We walked in and the room was trashed. Nothing was in one piece. Beware of the Black Nun!

Which Huw Pugh are you referring to? Capt. Hugh Pugh AKA Fflat Huw Puw is buried in Llanidan, quite a distance from Llangrannog.

BEWARE of the black nun is what WE say. We recently got back from Llangrannog Urrd centre where we stayed with friends overnight. We did activities all day and in the night, a few of us decided to make a short film about the tale of the Llangrannog nun. That night, after we finished the film, a lot of spooky things happened.

Doors banging open and shut.. when EVERYONE was sleeping in their beds, a light shining all around the rooms at about 3 in the morning, a dark scary figure walking past the lounge window and mysterious writing on the wall.

We reckon that the nun watched us shoot our film about her and got angry so decided to scare us. If you're going there urselves.. DONT make the black nun angry.. or she'll be coming for you!

The nun is real! I was with a few of my friends in the camp and we went out about four in the morning. As we were going out there was a dark figure standing outside in the hills. Me and my friends got scared and ran back to our dormitory where we stayed up until the morning watching our dormitory door in case the nun came in.

Not the black nun!! She's a tale that's told at Gwersyll yr Urdd Llangrannog, Glan Llyn and Pendine! I didn't know about Hugh Pugh but I shall endeavour to find out more now!

Yes I've heard the stories of Huw Pugh to. Also there is a story in Llangrannog about a Black Nun haunting the village and also the gwersyll there.
