Vetch Terraces
Matthew Davies of Birmingham writes about his Uncle Brian Nugent who has followed the Swans for 50 years:

A close member of my family, my Uncle Brian Nugent, will be holding a dual celebration to mark his 65th birthday, and more importantly 50 years supporting Swansea City Football Club!

His first game was on Saturday 9 October 1954. After having saved his pocket money for a month, he caught the train from South Glamorgan for his first visit to the Vetch to see the Swans play Middlesbrough. In spite of being born and bred in Cowbridge, traditional Cardiff territory, a two nil win with goals from Terry Medwin and Ivor Allchurch persuaded him that his Saturday afternoons were better spent following the boys in white rather than the boys in blue!

Ever since he has followed Swansea City through thick and thin, taking in thousands of matches across the country and from his favourite spot on the East Terrace. His dedication is even more remarkable considering he travels from his home in Leominister, Herefordshire, for every home game and has done for a number of years.

In an era when players, managers and even fans change their allegiance on seemingly a weekly basis, it is comforting to know that there are people who stick by their team whatever happens. Surely it is people like my Uncle Brian that make clubs like Swansea City greater than any Manchester United or Arsenal.

Matthew Davies

I think that Swansea City are playing the best football in the championship, and they have got a really good chance of getting promotion from the play-offs.

I have followed the Swans since I was seven-years-old...I can always remember the time when my Dad and I went to The Vetch and it was the last game ever played there and the team that we were up against was Wrexham, it was the FAW cup final, and we won... Everyone was ecstatic and the crowd went wild... everyone ran onto the pitch, it was great. Swans (in my opinion) are the most fantastic team in the world.

First time down [the] Vetch was 1946 - seen all the ups and downs, still a season ticket holder to a great club. Was 14-years-old then, would have been earlier but for WW2. We have had some great players in that time but I must say the present team is playing the best football ever, thanks to Roberto.

Mark - Morriston.I was with my Uncle in the pub prior to the Gillingham game in April, and I believe he pointed you out to me.(unless of course there have been other Swans fans that have taken a taxi from Swansea to Crewe because they missed the coach!). Fair play to you...you are indeed a "Super Fan!"

Two missed (in hospital) games in 27 years - home and away - include pre season games and taxi from Swansea to Crewe on Boxing Day!

...my first Swans game was when I was 7 we were playing Walsall. It was a draw 1-1...I go to about 12 games every season. I was a mascot for my 9th birthday playing Doncaster. We won 2-0. I ran out with Willy Gueret. Trundle scored two.

When I lived in H/WEST me and the lads used to go home and away we saw the good times and the bad times. From the fourth to the first. My best moment was when we beat LEEDS 5-1 in the first game in the first division. Let's get promotion this year and bring back the GOOD TIMES.NORTHBANK BOY UNTIL I DIE! Come on you SWANS

I can remember the first time I went to the Vetch Field - I was 13years old (I am now 20) and it was with my dad ever since then I have been a loyal Swans fan - even my first tattoo is the Swans logo. I now have a baby on the way and it will defo be a Swans fan like its mum.

I can still remember the very first chant I picked up from the Vetch and all true Swans fans will know it as well:Swansea, oh Swansea, oh city said I, I'll stand upon the North Bank till the day I die, take me to the Vetch Field way down by the sea, where I will follow Swansea, Swansea a city.

I will never forget those days they will be with me forever! Happy New Year to all the Swansea City afc fans, hope u have a gd one!

I have just found this page and avidly read all the postings. Memories came pouring back. My first visit to the Vetch Field was in 1954 - the opponents were the recently promoted Port Vale. Vale had only conceded 21 goals the previous season, and came to The Vetch carrying the tag "iron defence".

The Swans tore Vale apart winning 7-1, Ivor Allchurch scoring a hat trick. I was completely hooked, and "the golden boy" became my idol, and still is, despite no longer being with us. The team in those days were an absolute joy to behold, but sadly never made it to the First Division.

Many years have elapsed since my love affair with the Swans' began, great players like Alan Curtis and the late Robbie James, have graced the game and made me very proud to be a SWAN.

I lived in The Gambia for many years and formed The Serekunda branch of the Swansea City Appreciation Society. We would huddle around the radio and listen to the World Service on Saturday afternoons greedy for news of our beloved team.

What i would call a superfan is my brother Michael who don't miss a game home or away. And doesn't matter how they play he never ever slags the players off not like some of the so called jack army, and is favorite saying is there's always next week.

The first time I saw the Swans. I was four-years-old (with my Dad). Since then I'm a Jack. Born in Swansea, but moved to Germany in 1973. For the last 34 years I have managed to see about 5-6 games a season. Sometimes I fly over for a single game. Looking foward to the Dutch Tour because it's not far to drive. This season we are UP! Swansea till I die.

I have followed the Swans for over 40 years now due to having family in Upper killay and Dunvant. My uncle was big mates with Dai Gwyther in the late 60's and early 70's, I got to know Dai myself in that period and have followed the Swans ever since

I love the Swans...I would like to clone the Trund and create a superrace...I still manage to make it to the games and take part in many football activities run by the Swansea outreach special needs programme.

I was a Swansea City fan when they were Swansea Town. I spent many happy afternoons at the Vetch Field, standing on the terrace, and watching that great half-back line of Paul, Kiley and Burns. Add to those names the likes of the Allchurch brothers and Terry Medwin, and every game was a treat to watch.

I missed the team when I moved to Canada, but I was lucky to be home in Clynderwen when the Swans were going for promotion to the then First Division, and I was privileged to have a seat on the end of the bench when WE beat Brentford. Now we are on the way up again. You can do it!

Originally from Bridgend I have followed the Swans as long as I can remember, well, from when the old man said I was old enough to go! It was play off semi-final first leg v Torguay 88 I believe! (Hope I'm right!)Been hooked ever since! Mascot in 90, v Wigan won 3-1, got my picture with the late great Robbie James! Leggy scored two. Try to get down as often as I can to the Liberty, but being in Scotland and in the Forces it's a bit of a struggle at times! But got the crest on my leg now, so definitely Swansea till I die! Promotion this year! Get in!

I am from a family full of diehard Swansea fans. Whenever we visit England I try to see them playing, and I pay for internet feeds so we can watch Trundle (the master) at his best.

Crikey! First time I've logged onto here for a while and surprised by the amount of responses posted.

The above originally formed part of a letter I sent to the club before my uncle's 50-year mark supporting the Swans a year last January.

The club were good enough to put a small note in the match programme for the home game against Chester, which if my memory serves, we won at a canter 3-0.

As far as I'm concerned, my first game at the Vetch was in 1984, where as a 4 year old I remember little of a 2-0 home reverse against Manchester City.

Being mascot against Brentford in 1988 was a great memory, particularly having the chance to meet the great Robbie James and have my photo with him printed in the subsequent game's programme against Wolves.

However, living in the Midlands at the age that I was, I only ever seemed to get to the Swans' customary defeat at St. Andrews against the local lot.

The man responsible for me being bitten by the bug? The one and only Stevie Thornber.I don't remember the guy exactly setting the world on fire at the Vetch, but for anyone who was stood on the sparsely populated away terrace at the Hawthorns one winter afternoon knows the rest.

The quickest hat trick I can remember from a Swans player, and the first three points to boot. The rest as they say is history.

Peter Davies,ex Carmarthen, now Cyprus
My first game was the Swans home to Leeds Utd then in blue and yellow, with big John Charles, centre forward and captain for the day. Score 1-1, I sat on my fathers lap in the old double decker West Stand I don't remember much more as I was too young to remember. When I was 14 years old I never missed a home Saturday game for several years catching a train from Carmarthen in the morning buying lunch in Woolworth cafeteria and dropping stink bombs with my mates on the way out. Always a great day out total cost less than 1 quid. Then it was value for money.

Really glad to see the Swans hitting top form and Trundle scoring again on Friday night, although I am a little worried about the teams ease at conceding goals. I am persecuted and bullied for supporting the swans but I care not!!!!! xx

Keep the faith with Jackett we have seen what he can do even if he is a bit retarded with his transfer listing. I have been sent tapes of every game this season and have watched them all and we do not look bad recently! Up the Swans!! From Joberg!

I've been going to watch the Swans since I was 10 and I had a season ticket when I was 11 and I've still got 1 now and I'm 16. I go to nearly all the away games and I arrange my holiday so I dont miss a game haha.

I can't express my sudden joy for the Swans run of good form. I teach art at Salford College and one of my pupils David is a fan of the mighty swans. He believes Trundle is god meanwhile I feel Willy Gueret is brill.

As a die hard fan of the last 24 years (I'm 30) I can declare my undying love for the Swans. I have been to every game since I was 6 and am the leader of the Hale branch of the SWFC fan club. Also when I went to Salford College for my master degree I painted a peach in the Swansea colours.

Terry Jones ( Jonesy)
I used to go to The Vetch, but the new ground has no atmosphere and people seem to be more interested in drinking beer and getting drunk then watching football. Sad to say that I've now started travelling to Cardiff and the standard of football is a lot better.
Tue Sep 12 13:42:32 2006

I am a die hard fan even though I immigrated to South Africa I watch all the games and believe that we have a top manager. I am the president of the South Africa-Swansea FC Fan Club.

I'm from Llanelli but I am a Swansea fan through and through! I'm 17 and started supporting the Swans 9 years ago. I remember my first game as if it were yesterday and it was against Scarborough. I have had a season ticket for the past nine years and attend nearly every away game I can get to. I was extremely upset that we lost in the play off final last year, never mind, Swans to win promotion this year!! Jack Army!!

Listening to some of these stories about fans who come to watch their chosen team, the Swans, from long distances makes me feel lucky that I'm living only a short distance from the liberty stadium, and while we where there, The Vetch(never a bad time, always an experience to remember)! Matthew from birmingham, I guarentee ur uncle is respected as much now as he was when he stood on the east terrace and that he'll see more success in the near future! I'll never forget my first game. 1-1 draw with Reading and Ampadu scored the equaliser! I have every belief in the Swans getting promotion this year and if anyone else who calls themself a fan feels different, they need to look up the definition of fanatic or supporter!!!

I have followed Swansea from 1948, when Swansea school boys continually won the English Schools Shield. Oh for the days of Mel Charles, Ivor Allchurch, Cliff Jones, etc. Best game I have seen when we beat Liverpool rock on the Jacks. Even being a Spurs supporter in London. The first results are always the Swans. When the swans are in London I am there.

I travel a round trip of 400 miles for just about every Swansea home game and win, loose or draw I enjoy every visit to my home town. I have so far supported the Swans for more than 30 years seeing promotion relagation and almost being kicked out of the football league. If you take the trouble to write a message about the swans then try to be more upbeat during what could only be described as 'the good times are coming back'.For true fans the up and downs of football will be ever present, even Man U are seeing bad times right now.

Very interesting to read, especially as I am a fellow born and bred Cowbridge guy who's followed the Swans since day one despite being surrounded by these people who support some team who play in Blue. I'm not the only Jack in Cowbridge, via the internet I've found that about 10 of us exist these days! STID
