No Need for Nerves

Nick Morgan

Last updated: 12 September 2007

Having a bit of a crisis of confidence. Don't worry - it's really common for first years to be a little anxious.

Here Nick Morgan, Students' Union Welfare Officer offers a little advice.

You'll never walk alone....

This time of year will see many people preparing to start a new life with new friends in a new city and this can be one of the biggest lifestyle changes you go through.

If you are a first year student starting in September it's important to remember that you are not alone!

Thousands of people all over the UK will be in the same position as you and will be having the same worries and fears.

However, within your first week you will be completely immersed in university life, have met all your housemates, and seen the sights of your new city so that "first day" nerves really won't last long!

I was a first year student not so long ago and so I can well remember my arrival in Swansea - the mass of people, information and decisions I was faced with.

Freshers Fayre

However, what could have been an intimidating first week actually turned out to be one of my best weeks at university! I made a point of going to the Students' Union Freshers Fayre and joining a couple of the student societies and the football team.

This meant I had loads of socials and events to keep me very busy during my first term whilst I could have been studying!

I also went to many of the events and gigs that were put on by the Students Union including the Beerkeller and freshers ball - this help initiate me to Swansea's bars and clubs as well as the union bars which were a fantastically cheap night out!

There are over 13,000 students studying at Swansea University so remember you can be yourself and you will find like-minded people - in your house, on your course or through societies - so you don't have to fake it at all!

At the end of September there will be thousands of new students milling around Swansea University looking a little bit dazed and confused but remember that the Students' Union is your union and you can take advantage of our campus base by coming to see us with any queries, concerns or questions- this could be from where to find a lecture theatre to where to get a pint at 11 am!

We are here to help you make the most of your time in Swansea so don't be nervous, look forward to your first few weeks and make the most of all we have to offer - remember "Your Union - Your Experience"!
