Carnival's birthday celebration

Last updated: 09 May 2008

More details have been confirmed for the upcoming free event - World Party Weekend.

And this year Swansea's biggest and most colourful carnival celebrates a milestone its tenth birthday!

Be part of the fun and remind yourself how good an event it is with this gallery.

Since its inception Swansea MAS Carnival has grown to become the third biggest MAS Carnival parade in the UK.

The 10th Anniversary Swansea MAS Carnival returns on Saturday 23 August with the same route as 2007.

Wales' biggest and brightest carnival parade starts at 2pm from Walter Road and then flows through the Kingsway and Wind Street before all the costumes are presented on stage at the National Waterfront Museum.

The headline stage act is Harare Dread, a highly danceable African-Reggae artist from Zimbabwe and WOMAD Festival regular.

Participants can join SWICA for three weeks of free carnival workshops to make costumes, practice dance and drumming. They will be held daily (except Sundays) from 12 noon to 9pm at Counterpoint Theatre, Swansea College from Wednesday 6 August.

Samba Tawe has confirmed that City Streets - Summer Beats, on Sunday 24 August from 1pm, will be headlined by Oojami. The group perform global music with Turkish influences and modern beats.

Oojami is the creation of Necmi Cavli, originally from Bodrum in Turkey. He moved to London in the nineties and started making his own music in a small basement in North London.

Over the last six years Oojami have produced three albums, played hundreds of gigs in over fifteen countries and featured on more than thirty compilations around the world.

Jo McCarthy of Samba Tawe said "We are delighted to have secured Oojami to headline City Streets - Summer Beats. Swansea is going to hear a one-off mix of traditional Turkish music, with dance beats and rap vocals."

World Party Weekend takes place on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August at the grounds of the National Waterfront Museum. The event is free for all of the family to enjoy and will include carnival, colour, drums, dancing and lots of authentic food.

SWICA's Amaru Chatawa, Artistic Director of Swansea MAS Carnival said "When we first introduced Caribbean-inspired Carnival workshops to Swansea, I knew in my heart that the people of Swansea were up for masquerading and collective creativity like no other community I'd worked in before".

"I can safely say on behalf of all Swansea revellers that it is here to stay. Swansea has uniquely embraced and made the flamboyance and excitement of MAS Carnival its own".
