Swansea University Summer Ball

Last updated: 20 June 2008

Let's be honest when it comes to summer events we live in the hope that the weather will favour the brave. So how was the ball in 2008? Lleu Williams was there - see what he has to say.

The Summer Ball is always the highlight of the social scene every year in Swansea, and this year was no different.

In the preceding days, the sun shone, as always in Swansea, and this year's Summer Ball promised to be a dry one! How wrong was I!

Despite the rain, the evening kicked off brilliantly with many students, including myself, taking full advantage of the free funfair at the ball - getting the rides in while we were all relatively sober!

With a free funfair, some awesome music on show and many bars and food outlets to choose from, the Summer Ball was shaping up to be the great event that is has become!

By early evening, many of the main bands, DJ's and music acts had started performing in a variety of marquees and stages around Abbey Meadows with the ball becoming more of a mini-festival than a ball itself - which created an electric and exciting atmosphere despite the heavy downpours!

With me and a couple of friends taking shelter for long periods in the evening due to the rain, listening to acts such as Killa Kela and Mutya Buena certainly made up for the glum weather.

But with a stroke of luck, the heavens stopped with the rain before the headline act, the Wombats came on stage to lift us from our gloom with their hits "Let's Dance to Joy Division" and "Backfire at the Disco".

The glumness was relieved further with the appearance of the Vengaboys who managed to cheer up everyone with their stream of nineties hits!

Despite getting an absolute soaking in our 'number ones' and ball gowns, the ball certainly lived up to the hype!

It was fantastic party for many students leaving but also for many staying, I would urge everyone to attend in future, even if it does bucket it down!
