Refugee Week in Swansea

Refugee Week celebrates the contribution made by refugees to UK life and promoting understanding of why people become refugees.

This year, it runs from 16 to 22 of June. The week concludes with a two-day weekend festival at the National Waterfront Museum, featuring folk, jazz, classical music and dance, lots of fun activities for kids, and a chance to find out about plans to declare Swansea a "City of Sanctuary".


Local groups in Swansea have organised a series of events to mark Refugee Week. All events are free and children are welcome - childcare will be provided where appropriate.

Saturday 14 June

Hafan Books Presentation; Borders bookstore, Fforestfach; 12am-3pm:

Monday 16 June

Launch of the 'New Arrivals' website: Grand Theatre Arts Wing; 9.30am-2pm; Swansea University's Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE) launches a new website to "provide a useful and informative resource for all new arrivals to Swansea including refugees, asylum seekers, and migrant workers."

Tuesday 17 to Thursday 19 June

Photography, pottery, crafts and arts workshops; Dragon Arts Centre, 54 Morfa Road, Hafod, Swansea; various times.

Weds 18 June

'Celebrating Each Other'; National Waterfront Museum; 10am-5pm Launch of the DACE Parenting Project art exhibition.

Thursday 19 June

Ethnic food tasting and henna tattooing; Cyrenians Community Centre, Rear of St. Mathews Church, High Street, Swansea; 2pm-5pm Taste and enjoy food from around the world. There are only 80 places available for this event - please call Dragon Arts on 01792 467940 to ensure a place.

Thursday 19 June

Kurdish Evening; Cyrenians Community Centre, Rear of St. Mathews Church, High Street, Swansea; 6pm. An evening of Kurdish Music and food hosted by the Kurdish Welfare Association and open to everyone.

Friday 20th June

Women's Night; Swansea Museum; 7pm.

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June

Festival of Music, Theatre and Dance; National Waterfront Museum; 11am-5pm each day. Entertainment and education for all the family featuring: jazz, folk, classical, Berber, Kurdish, Ukrainian, Congolese and many other types of music and dance, plus theatre and poetry Performers include Tracey Curtis, Andy Jones, Huw Dylan Owen, Daniel Williams, Afro-Carib Dancers, The Skylarks, Pola & Ata, Dilay, Mike da Costa, Gloria Chorale, and many more

Circus Eruption, T.A.R.D.I.S., Welcome to Play and lots more for children Meeting (Saturday at 2) on the new UK-wide City of Sanctuary movement, and how Swansea might become one. Stalls including SBASSG, BAWSO, SWICA (MAS Carnival), Displaced People in Action, African Community Centre, South Wales Police Minority Support, Interfaith and others.

Wednesday 25 June

Launch of 'The Sand Garden' (El Jardin de Arena); The Chattery, Uplands, Swansea; 7pm. A new collection by Swansea based Chilean poet Humberto Gatica - with poets Nigel Jenkins and Malcolm Parr, and musician Igor Sazonov.
