The Swansea Philharmonic Choir was founded in 1959 by the late Haydn James, who was a well known and respected member of the musical world in South Wales. This mixed choir now performs under the baton of Clive John, who is continuing the traditions established over the past 47 years.
The Choir has approximately 100 members and is noted for its performances of both classical and modern works. Every year, two major concerts are performed in Swansea by the choir - one in the Brangwyn Hall and one in St. Mary's Church, invariably augmented by a full orchestra and with distinguished soloists.
The works performed are carefully selected to incorporate well-known music and also newer works or music which may not be so frequently heard. Recently, the choir commissioned a choral composition from Stephen McNeff, who is from Swansea and some of whose work has already been performed by the choir.
The city of Swansea is twinned with Mannheim in Germany and the choir upholds this tradition by visiting Mannheim to sing with their Bach Choir which has also come to Swansea to sing on several occasions. A truly memorable combined performance of Benjamin Britten's 'War Requiem' will always be a highlight of our repertoire.
The choir rehearses once a week for two hours on a Thursday evening at Bishop Gore school, Swansea. Our rehearsal accompanist is Susan Croall, who works closely with the conductor to bring out the best in the choir. She has been the choir accompanist for some years and her contribution to the life of the choir is much appreciated.
The choir is always open to new members and for more information, please contact email - Swansea.philchoir@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website www.swansea-phil-choir.ik.com
