Rebuilding Swansea Leisure Centre

Last updated: 26 April 2007

Swansea Leisure Centre played an important part in many lives. It was officially reopened on Friday 7, 2008, you can click to read about the official ceremony but witness the rate of progress on the build of the new centre with our two galleries; see the first stages below and then check out our second gallery from June 2007.

April 2007: here's how it looks from the footbridge. The original centre was shut in 2003 because of safety concerns, but work on the redeveloped version should be finished by December.

We are going to visit the LC2 soon as part of our Swansea topic. Does anyone have any old photos of when the Leisure centre first opened? It would be great to compare.

I love the new pool - it is great. There's so many things to do. There's about five slides, a surf machine (I don't think I'll try that though!), wave machine, a lazy river - it is the best pool I've ever been to - I love it!

They cost of swimming in the 'new' centre is far too high...It is very disappointing :-(

Great to see a new leisure centre opening in Swansea. I was one of the original staff at the old centre when it opened in '77. Lots of fun times had by all.

The leisure centre was so much fun and it's great that it'll be re-opening soon. I'm one of those people who hates change though. I know it'll be greatly improved but there won't be anymore spacebowl (something I was always too scared to try since I was so young) and no more Tutti-Frutti (the yellow and red slide...well that's what I always called it anyway!) I miss the 'smarties' on the ceiling too...It'll be fantastic to have it back though and I'm sure I'll grow to love it, even without the smarties! I wonder if the chips in the cafe will taste the same? Hmm...

I was so gutted when the centre closed down in '03, had nowhere decent to go for a swim except the Aquadome which doesn't compare, I find. I only found out the other week that the centre has now nearly been finished, i was chuffed. Can't wait for it to open.

It was the place to be. As a child I spent a lot of time there with my sisters and friends and loved taking my little girl there as it was the place me and her dad had our first date.

"Would all swimmers wearing yellow armbands please leave the pool now!" - I remember trying to avoid the life guards to try and get an extra 5 mins in the pool in what was at the time an excellent facility. Im glad that in the end, Swansea council have seen sense and redeveloped the old leisure centre. Can't wait to take my own kids there now and give them some fond memories of the 'leisure' like I have :-)

We used to play squash there after working morning shift or on our day off, then pop into the bar for a chinwag & pint, the facilities were excellent, when you have a golden egg look after it, or it will soon turn into a brass egg then all you'll be left with is a shell, which is why we're rebuilding from scratch. Keep the prices competitive for all, we will return.

Come on get it done for Swansea. A must when I was a kid going into Swansea with my brother and cousins going on the hydro slide when it was first there and the metal slides in the deep end where you had to sit up in case you bumped your head.

The wave machine was great as well. It's time Swansea created more memories. As you look around swansea now and as you drive in, everything is half built or half knocked down. I have a seven-year-old son now and can't wait for this. Be ahead of Cardiff again and have a facility in Wales even people across the bridge will remember, present quotes above noted! This should have been done years ago.

I spent alot of time throughout my childhood and teenage years at the Leisure Centre. It was always the place to go and enjoy many different activities.

My earliest memories are of the swimming pool, and like some others have said, the days we had to queue for ages to get in. The waves were so much fun and so was the hydraslide, and consequently the big red&yellow slides and spacebowl. It was such a fun day out. And the baby pool was always very popular.

My later memories are of the 'roller disco's' they had at weekends. It was like another family there with the usual faces and happy people.

I think Swansea is really missing having such a range of activities centred in the city. Bring back the roller discos - or even make them ice disco's! I am also looking forward to a much improved health suite and gym - those jacquzzi's were such a stress reliever...and sauna topped the lot!!! Hurry up and get it finished!!!

We have been coming to the Gower and Swansea area for 25 years. Often, when it was raining, we used to take our toddler to the swimming pool trying to persuade her to let go of the babyslide and get wet in the shallow end. She is now 14 and we are coming again on 21st July, pity the pool won't be ready because she is a real water babe now and has never forgotten her time at the leisure centre.

I used to love going to the leisure centre when I was younger and I look forward to the completion so I can take my 6-month old son swimming. Of course, by the time it's finished, he'll be a lot older...

I remember being allowed to leave work to run up Brynymor Road to see the Queen as she came down Walter Road en route to open the Leisure Centre. My twins (now 18)ALWAYS had to include a visit there otherwise their trips to Swansea were not complete. We all look forward to rekindling very happy memories

I remember that horrible cold steel turnstyle revolving door that you had to walk through to get from the changing rooms to the swimming pool. The noise it made was scarry!

Karen from Manchester

As a Swansea girl I used to love going to the Leisure Centre and remember the days when you had to queue outside to get in (and those where in the days before the hydraslide). 'Will all swimmers please move to the shallow end of the pool for the waves' will be ingrained on my brain for the rest of my life.

I now live in Manchester and myself and my hubby, who also grew up in Swansea, always comment that that is one thing missing from this big city a place to go and have fun in the water. We are expecting our first child soon and can't wait to take him to the new Leisure Centre when visiting his grandparents.

We went to the pool evey school holidays as a treat and it was the slides that I always spent hours on. I used to love going outside the building in the tube on a wet day with it raining on the top.

Finally!!! Swansea's inward investment and continued development makes a leisure centre a must have. The only shame is that it is not in private hands, where the work would undoubtedly be completed sooner.

Have you got fond memories of the old Swansea Leisure Centre? Was it the wave machine or the slide that always grabbed your attention? Are you looking forward to the new centre opening?
