Charity bike trek from Lands End to John O'Groats

Brendan Davies and Stephen Kyme

Last updated: 13 June 2006

Two Neighbourhood Support Unit workers are set to cycle 874 miles, from one end of the UK to the other. Brendan Davies, from Pontarddulais, and Stephen Kyme from Birchgrove will undertake the 10 day marathon as part of NSPCC Cymru Wales new annual event, the 'Big Bike Ride'.

Stephen and Brendan will set out from Land's End on August 31, and are hoping to arrive John o' Groats on September 9.

Over the weekend of 30 June 2006 hundreds of people across Wales will be taking to their bikes as part of the Big Bike Ride - to find out more telephone 0845 456 0001, or visit the website: www.nspcc.org.uk/bigbikeride.

Father-of-two Brendan, aged 32, said:
"Both Stephen and I have wanted to ride from Lands End to John o' Groats for quite a while. We also wanted to do it for charity. The NSPCC seemed the obvious choice for us. We're both fathers and having seen the many adverts on television it wasn't a difficult decision in the end. The support the NSPCC gives to vulnerable children is excellent."

Both Brendan and Stephen have recently joined a local cycling club, Bynea Cycling Club. The club has offered to sponsor the two men on their ride, though they would still like to raise more funds and are seeking sponsorship from individuals or businesses in their local community.

Julie Richards, NSPCC community appeals manager said: "I am delighted by Brendan and Stephen's commitment to fundraising for NSPCC Cymru Wales and their support of our new annual event, the Big Bike Ride.
"This is a huge challenge and is going to take a great deal of training and preparation. It would be great to see the local community get behind them with either sponsorship or a donation."
The number to call to find out more about sponsoring Brendan or Stephen is 01792 648507.
