Rhossili

Rhossili

Last updated: 30 July 2007

This massive, West facing bay bears the brunt of South Westerly storms thrown at the Gower Peninsula.

  • Rhossilli Webcam

  • Rhossili is at the southern end of the bay where the unusual promontory of Worms Head, gives it some protection from the wind.

Rhossili Bay picks up any swell going and can therefore be a good place to head for especially when Llangennith is maxed out. Offshore South Easterly and Southerly winds can produce some excellent beach break conditions.

Longboarders favour this stretch of beach as it's generally a bit mellower and smaller but it can also be good for shortboarders and can produce fast, hollow waves.

Big lines marching into Rhossilli - image by caws Keep an eye out for the rip on bigger days. Not so long ago on a solid 6ft+ day I saw a guy being rescued by a Sea king helicopter. He'd become tired and was heading out in the rip towards the rocks inside Worms Head.

They had to cut his leash as they winched him up and his board was last seen flying in the direction of Worms Head...

South Westerlies can be good too, but the waves will start to lose their quality. Westerly winds result in blown out waves and North and North Westerly winds don't tend to generate any swell here.

Park in the top car park and make your way down the path to the beach. You'll notice a ship wreck sticking out of the sand at low tide and keep an eye out for paragliders landing on the beach in Summer!

After a hard days surfing, relax and unwind with a pint up at the Worms Head hotel.

Surfed Rhossili today. It was howling offshore winds but three foot barrels and catching waves with your girl unbeatable - love it. Gower rocks forgotten about hawaii already!

Hey guys, I am not a surfer, but I agree with some of the comments on here...you ignorant people who drop litter on any beach on Gower for crying out loud put it in a bin

I went surfing for the first time last year, Vince, at Llangenith beach. Took a one day course and found it really good. So Llangennith can be good for beginners. Plus there is a good place to camp if u don't mind a shortish drive: Port Eynon camp site. Very nice place, lovely views.

I have been surfing here for 30-plus years, I still cant believe the rubbish that is left in the car park! Wax covers, cans and other things you would not want to step in. If you take a carrier bag and walk around your van or car you will not believe how quick you will fill it! Try it... you'll be amazed at how good you feel!

Lovely break, Couple of stares paddling out but nothing out of the ordinary, still no way near as busy round here as in cornwall, thank yourselves lucky... And seriosly, I don't know what the fuss is about the water quality, seems ok to me, anyway, lets face it, anyone with any sense is going to surf here offshore. Cheers to Pete the local I met in the car park last weekend who lent me his fin key.

What do peeps think about the swell this weekenk it lookd massive, Genith and Rhos look like they gonna be huge or maxed out, will caswell be better as it is more sheltered? Or how bout port enyon? too big? Iv only ever surfed 3ft but have been out in 15ft, not too experinced so thought that caswell would be the best option what does anyone else think?

its amazing how many people call themselves local when they live nowhere near the area. I have lived on gower for 16 years and still dont call myself local! And for those of you who seem to think its hard to paddle out over 2 foot why dont you go down to cornwall and use the rips instead of filling up the crowded swansea waves

hey sophie, Rhossili in Feb, will be cold so id be covered in inches of winter rubber, boots, hood, the lot. You sound brave to be staying in tents, but there is a youth hostel near by, which provides cheap accomodation if u get cold. Happy waves, Haz

Stoked to be out last weekend. Big up the wacky wembley weekend warriors! No aggression in the line up, had my best ever wave on my surf kayak. A beautiful stretch of coast, and the shopping at Forest Fach is to die for!

I come down here most weekends and have been learning to surf for 6 years but am still struggling to paddle out on days over 2 foot. Rhossili can be powerful, are there any more mellow spots?

I really love surfing here as I find the waves at Llangenith can be a bit difficult to paddle out in when it get to 4 foot. It's very good for beginners/intermediates. Happy surfing everybody and take care in those waves.

There is something for everyone here at Rhossili and Llangennith; from small, slow waves to faster aggressive hollows (3Peaks). I use this beach every weekend, whether it's for surfing, windsurfing or walking my dog - a message to you grockles...please take your litter home - do you want us locals to throw litter in your town?! Stay chilled!

In 1996 there was a massive beach festival at Hill End. Great weather, (except as usual that meant small waves), and a fantastic atmosphere. Watched England beat Holland in Euro 2000 crowded round a black and white portable in the VeeDub, before partying all night. To the organisers... do it again!!

This was the first place I caught a wave and freed myself from hours of paddling! Although on a bad day at Llangennith you can paddle forever... Lots of happy memories and the sunsets aren't bad either!

Just had my first lesson here, stayed at the Hill End Camp site. Will definitelu go again. Already planning my next trip. Shame about the thoughtless littering on the beach though.

    Cassian from Gennith
I used to surf this beach almost every day. It’s a great beach with excellent waves on a regular basis. However, if you come down here don’t make a mess because I’ve seen horrible bloody accidents involving glass down here and it’s always the innocent who are hurt. Also other rubbish screws various things up for the environment so use a bin. Any ways it’s a cracker look after it.
    Wed Jun 8 12:16:57 2005

Go to Gennith often, wicked waves can't wait to get back riding the waves on what I think is the best surfing beach in South Wales.
    Thu May 26 17:42:52 2005

    John Gibbs, Loughor
Llangennith is one of the best beaches in the U.K, the water is clean there are no strong currents only on a big swell there is a camp site right next to the beach which makes it ideal for everyone! The only problem is that when people have parties in the dunes not only do they leave their rubbish cans etc. they smash their bottles which make it very dangerous for children playing in the dunes! If these people could see the injuries they could cause they would not do it. Us locals use the beach all year round and not for two weeks of it. Enjoy it don't abuse it!

A great wave one of my favourites bit more sheltered than Gennith, doesn't get as blown out, love to longboard it!

Hi, I've been surfing for 5 years now, and I'm really good I can stand up, and sometimes ride the clean. Gennith is a really good wave but gets really scary at 2 ft+. Can I say hello to my girlfriend claire. HBP.

Gennith great for all surf craft, my main sport is kayaking but saw these two local guys on skis, wow could they turn it on.
Cool relaxed place with plenty of room, a better option than the crowds of Devon.

It has be a family tradition to visit Hill End camp site for many years, my children are the fourth generation to recently start their enjoyment on the beach and in the waves at Llangennith, the only complaint is the recent price hikes to stay at the camp site.

Also I don't recommend Rhosili if ur unfit - gettin up all those steps mid-summer is a nightmare with or without a surf board, but the beach is great and has some super waves.

Last summer I spent literally all my time off in Llangennith camping. It was awesome I'd recommend u take ur friends there like I plan to again this summer but I'm bringing my board this time.

Slow break, only for longboarders, if you want a hectic barreling, sucky wave, surf the outer reef on the Worms Head. No wind is essential but can hold 8ft. Best wave in Wales.

Been surfin for 25 years around the Gower. When I first started the water quality was pretty bad. People were getting ear infections, stomach bugs and other nasty conditions, not to mention the things you would be paddeling past in the water. Things have definatly improved scince the water treatment plant being installed. What we should be concerned about is the dredging off our coasts that could have serious implications for our beaches.

Martin, Take a treck north up the same beach to Gennith and check out the camp site there. Reasonable prices and a cracking pub at the top of the hill called the Kings head.

The water quality is getting better now but it tends to be bad after a big storm - brings the jellys in. Good surf but a long paddle out, not for the unfit when there's a big swell. Great beach!

Martin from Brighton there's a campsite next to the car park and SD,Cardiff in the village before you get to the beach there is a shop called PJ's surf shop which lends boards and wetsuits. Also there is a surf school near the carpark.

My family used to holiday at Hill End Llangennith in the 60's, but someone told me recently that swimming there is not so good coz of the jelly fish! I never saw any as a kid, I'm planning to go back there to swim soon, is it a problem?

Anyone know anywhere local to camp for a surf trip?

Llangenith - water quality. Last week very bad but that was due to the jellyfish and algae more than sewage. People are making the beach an eyesore though, leaving their rubbish.

Hi guys, I normally check the Rhosilli web cam every day but it dosen't seem to be updated from June 25th is there a problem with it? It's really handy as I live quite far from the beach to see if the trip is worth while cheers.

Hi, I've been having a discussion with my mate about the water quality of Llangenith beach. He thinks it has deteriorated in recent years whilst I think the water quality has improved. What do you think?
