Newgale

Newgale, Easter 2005 by Tony Evans

Last updated: 18 April 2006

Newgale is a nice long beach break, safe for all levels of surfing.

At high tide the surf is generally swallowed up as the water pushes up onto a steep pebble bank. The pebbles, which often get pushed over onto the road below after big tides and heavy swells. Newgale - mart

The surf is normally a tad bigger than at Whitesands, a little further up the coast. It faces a similar direction to Freshwater West but is alot tamer and never as big or gnarly.

If freshwater West is out of your league then head over to Newgale for a more manageable session. At low tide there are normally plenty of peaks to be had - so time your surf accordingly. On bigger days with offshore winds, Newgale gets nice and hollow and has been known to produce 6ft barrels.

Newgale - mart

There are often good peaks to the left hand side of the beach @ mid/low tide so take a wander if it's crowded.

The local surf shop - Newsurf do a daily report and also out hire boards and wetsuits.

There is a handy surf check vantage point and carpark on the left hand side as you come down the hill into Newgale from the West.

Nearby, there's a campsite at the back of the beach providing handy accomodation for travelling surfers. Up in the village after the bridge, you'll find a few little shops and cafes but that's about it.

Check these websites for daily surf reports and photos of the beach.

I go there every year as a break from Gower - camp on top of the hill! You can watch the swell coming in and the views are incredible. The walk up and down the hill is well worth it and has easy access to the right-hand side of the beach.

Can get some incredible surf here if you're dedicated to this one beach. I've seen 8ft+ here, but it can get some beautiful, clean 6ft breaks, and the wildlife is great. A seal came 5m away from my board once. Don't surf in summer though, you get a tiny patch and it's impossible to surf, great in the winter though.

Always a place in my heart for Newgale. Surfed it in late seventies/early eighties with Dennis Cooper Andy Roberts.Reg Goddard Mick Robbins etc. Friendliest surfing area in UK. Still surfing and now powerkiting. Will be back very soon hope these guys are still around. See you soon Malc

This place sucks....there are many more places that beat this hands downs...the guy in the surf shop who does the surf reports cant tell the differance between flat and 6ft...if he says 3ft or less its flat...i dout he even knows which side of the surf board to lay on...

Most surfs don't rate Newgale, but I think on its day it up there with Whitesands an Fresh East. Never gets packed and there's usually some class of a wave there. Excellent shop an cafe. The only drama is the tourists an the rubbish they leave behind. How hard is it to put it in one of the hundred or so bins down there?

Kate John from Broad Haven. WOW, is how I'm feeling generally at the moment as I have had the huge priveledge of recently moving to BroadHaven, a few of miles down the road from Newgale, and have just learned to surf this summer. Newgale was a fantastic place to learn, and I recommend it for beginners as well as the more advanced surfer. It offers something for all and is beautiful to boot. But the best thing of all is it's so long, most of the time you don't have to worry about collisions - unlike whitesands this summer which was often a case of watch you don't decapitate someone on the way in! ! Newgale will always be magic for me - I caught my first ride as the sun was setting and shimmering accross the cleanest of lines in the 16 degree water. Then nipped accross the road for a pint! Awesome!!!!

Nice wave on the whole. Love it in the summer when the swells pick up a bit. Have some great days when the hurricane swells hit from Florida. Works best between 3 and 6 foot. Doesn't perform well at all above 6 or 7 in my opinion. If the waves are big here head somewhere else unless you're up for a bit of a challenge. Downside is it's prone to strong winds as it's a very big open beach (you can always see loads of kite surfers here) and it's difficult to get out in slightly larger swell. Also you find quite a few long boarders surfing here who tend to snatch up all the waves before some of us short boarders. On the whole it's a nice tidy beach break. Ideal beach if your learning but it can get crowded with swimmers in summer.

Perfect Beach, Perfect vibe, perfect waves when it's on! Been surfing in the pembrokshire area for many years, and when the swell and wind is just right, Newgale is the best around. Pleanty of breaks all along the beach, probably best near the middle car park. Go surf it!

Surf here quite often in my KAYAK !!! The beach has some real cracking sets on times. Such a big beach but seems to be (at times) little room in the vast ocean for Kayakers and surfers, crazy really; cause we are all after the same thing, a good day out. Happy surfin guys

Newgale, Sunday 11 December - A thank you to another surfer!

My second surfing trip, and had a bit of a scare! Found I had drifted and got caught in undertow/ rip tide near the cliff quite a way out - and all other people out of sight. Couldn't get back to shore, but luckily a couple of large waves and board eventually helped me to scramble back in.

Would like to thank the male surfer and his friend who were alert enough to spot me waving, and would have gone in to rescue me! If you read this, get in touch, as I think I was too relieved to thank you.

In future I'll definitely be paying more attention to other surfers - and also to where the beach is!

As a beginner I've surfed Newgale in all conditions. Renowned for being difficult to get out back, however, one of the finest beaches in the West!!!!! Even when on a cold November evening having my bag nicked from the beach with my car keys in it!!!!!!

I found Newgale a little intimidating to be honest. As I've been surfing for 3 years and still can't get up on my mal every time so I tend get trashed. Newgale is the only beach I surf at because many of the other beaches are too powerful. Last time I went to Newgale it was about 3 foot and clean but did not stay in for long because it was dangerous for me as I'm not a great swimmer. I also like to surf Pendine because it's nice and gentle and I can surf on my stomach.
