Six foot barrels forecast at Burleigh this weekend, thought I'd check out what's happening at the Ghengis...it said "flat" with the three hour forecast reading "dropping off". Not quite sure how that works, but it sure makes me glad I'm here!

Four of us out near Gennith the other day. Frosty old morning but soon warmed thanks to the sight of glassy 3ft peelers rolling into the bay. Just as I was thinking how it could possibly get any better my attention was caught by a dark mass lumbering ahead of us about 50 yards out to sea. My mind flicked through images of what it could be...a seal? Nonsense. Far too big. A wreck? No wreck there son. Suddenly what do I see? A dorsal fin! AAARRRRggghhh.... Be it a whale or a massive basking shark, its huge stone-coloured bulk gently rose and fell, even partially revealing the tail bit too, as I looked on in awe and fascination.
Realising there was nothing I could do but watch, I just, well, watched as the this small dark hill silently went about whatever business it had to attend to. A fleeting visit, Moby bobbed around a bit then seemed to have had enough and disappeared out to sea. The End.
Pretty cool and interesting session all in all. Did anyone else see it? Does anyone know what 'it' was? Open to suggestions, comedy or otherwise, but it was definately fin-equiped and larger than a trout. Happy surfing.

Good to hear that you love the place Tarquin, its truely unquie and beautiful all year round to be enjoyed and respected by all, but lets hope Gennith never turns into a slone haven like Rock in Devon!!

Marvellous place 'the gennith', had a 'tunnel' there last week, saw a chap 'turn' on his 'stick' too, keep up the webcam so I know when to get the old chopper down, how about one on those 'reefs' places father tells me about?

Great cam I love to see the breakers when i turn on my computer in the morning, reminds me of paddling out and saying hi to everyone and fiting in by playing games like how many surfers can we fit on a wave, and who can say the word "man" the most after every other word. great stuff and again gnarly cam

I've just moved into my new house in Penclawdd near the Gower. I've been surfing for 8 years but because I lived in Oxford I couldn't get to the beach much. Can I call myself local now? I can stand up for quite a while now and I'm thinking of changing my 7'6'' surf betty for a fish. Thanks ever so much for the camera dudes. Life saver!

Hi guys, great news about the web cam - lovin' it! Now I know exactly when to take on the six hour drive to Langennith and get radical on my jet ski. And no hassles if you're not local - hey, remember, give us respect and be respected! Big shaka to the Winchester over 40's sea-canoe club!!!

I have been surfing the Gower for over a year now and consider myself to be fairly local but I keep hearing some of the boys talking about "trams" in hush tones. Is this a secret reef?

It's been a great summer surfing and exploring this part of the world. Great beaches, friendly locals and world class waves. Just got my first barrel, the boyz in the office are sooo jealous. Great to have the web cam up and running.

Great web cam, I find the drive down the M4 much more bearable knowing there is some good juice! Gennith is a great place to get away from the city, just bought a Jp board and almost feel like a local. Bring on the SW winds and autumn swells. Hang 5 dudes!

As a "local" surfer I shouldn't really need the camera but I am a little lazy so
I look at the webcam instead of walking up the hill. I wish the camera had been up earlier though because the water's going to get colder soon and I'll be giving up surfing until next spring. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work. Luke.

I was on Mewslade Beach on Monday and a bunch of chavs walked onto the beach swigging from beer cans..... yes you guessed it they stood on the edge of the surf and dropped the cans where they stood and started to walk back up the beach.
Now, I'm not backward in coming forward so I politely said '' excuse me I think you 've left something behind'' .
They looked at me as if I was from another planet, who did they think was going to clear up after them?... I do not understand the mentality of these people.
Why come to a beautiful beach and then spoil it by leaving your mess behind?
I picked up the cans and followed them up the beach and eventually they sent one of their kids back to take them off me.
However, when I left the beach the cans had been left in the gulley so I still ended up taking them home myself !
Tue Aug 23 18:34:12 2005
Dambo, Llanelli
At the end of the day we aren't here to clean up after these townies and the ignorant masses that use the beach. That said, I always pick up a bottle or can or two on my way back through the dunes and put it in the wheely bin. Lets lead by example!

I'm going to Llangennith Friday. If anyone wants to know what the surf is like over the weekend, I will use my powerfull telepathic skills to inform you - this is not a joke, I will know if you think it is and will be offended.

Well said fellas. And to the people who think that putting the rubbish in bags and leaving it in the dunes/on the beach is acceptable: it's not! Don't trash the Gower.

I've been surfin flat out this week in Llangennith and Thurday and today there were 20 foot waves there. Can you fix the surf cam because it'a a long journey to Llangennith and I don't know if the waves are good enough.
Fri Jun 17 20:45:53 2005
Peter from Gower
Like the rest of you guys I miss the cam but it would be easier to judge the size and quality of the surf if it was in real time or a least had regular videos. Snapshots can be misleading particularly from the perspective of the Worms Head hotel.

Love Gennith to surf funny really this year, we haven't had much swell at all considering we have had a rough winter and always if the waves top 6 foot they are messy and choppy not good then!

Hello all. Firstly, apologies on behalf of the BBC for how long it's taking to get a new cam up and running here.
Contrary to what some might think, we are running a *very* tight ship budget-wise, and so when the old cam went down we had to, in effect, go right back to the drawing board - in terms of the technology, location, phone line, health& safety, the lot! There are a number of issues that we've had to resolve involving all of those, and we're still, at present, testing a new purpose-built unit which we hope to have in place soon.
I realise that's been said before, but this time we're confident that we should have a new cam up before too long - with a better picture and more reliable updates. Do bear with us - it will be worth it!
Fri Mar 11 13:02:08 2005
Jon
Why not ask Hill End Campsite, Eddy's or someone at Rhossilli to sponsor a cam? Surely its a great way of advertising at one of the busiest beaches in Wales and everyones happy?

This is actually the time when the water temp is the coldest, you should have waited until now to take a break, part timer.

Miss the webcam, was reliable indicator of if the trip was worth it...but agree with 'Mumbles' there are still other ways of reading the surf. Hope when it comes back it's got a better picture quality with maybe a zoom too...and maybe best pic of the month? Better be worth the wait basically.
Wed Jan 26 10:10:48 2005

Surely if they can get photos back from a rock orbiting Saturn 900 million milles away, we should be able to photos of a beach at the end of Gower.
Only joking of course, everyone appreciates this service, and looks forward to its return.

Wicked idea using alternative technology to power the cam. Leading by example, I like it. It's location is almost ideal to make the best of all conditions.
It should then be easy to get the images updated every min., or less!!
No more missing those days when it does occasionaly does turn it on ay??!!

Hi Folks. Rest assured we are working on getting a new cam installed here, so please bear with us. A great many technical issues meant we had to take down the previous cam; the new cam, when it launches, will provide a much better quality service. So do keep checking back!

Nice to see a bit of home - and some familiar names on the message board. Pog (say hi to Diddy), Slug etc. No laverbread here - shame as it would put the sharks off! Surfed Gennith in July - cold, raining, mushy 3ft - cowin' loved it. Makes Bondi look like Black Pill lido!

I LOVE Gennith the best beach in Gower!!

Well then Spanky, for a comprehensive school teacher, and a self professed 'expert in all languages", your spelling and grammar leaves something to be desired. It's "you're" not "your".

Very sorry Mwnci bach to hear your a gog! Where I come from Twpsyn is Masculine and Twpsen is feminine. And seeing as I am a lady and also a welsh comprehensive teacher and an expert in all languages, I am a Twpsen!! Only joking about the gog bit by the way, no hard feelings!!!! xxx

In the office in Bali, been surfing Uluwatu early this morning 3-5ft,crystal water and only 10 guys out. So even though I'm looking at your cam at Genith, it brings me back to 26 yrs ago when I first started surfing. Never forget your Welsh, I don't hence the Welsh flag on my board being seen every time its infront of my face. Long live laverbread!!!!!

My dear Spanky, without getting too petty here, 2 things. 1. I am originally from Angelsey, which makes me a GOG, and 2. I'm a comprehensive school teacher who's subject is Cymraeg. Now,if you look it up in a geiriadur then you'll find the correct spelling is TWPSYN and not twpsen.

The cam's brilliant, but too far away from the waves - as has been said. Perhaps put one on the café in the main part of the beach (in the Llangennith car park) to catch the action in a better way?

Excellent website, great web cams. One criticism with the Llangennith cam is it shows a beautiful shot of the bay, but you can't see what the waves are like. Perhaps you could ditch it all together and move it to Rest Bay Porthcawl.
Wed Jun 30 11:20:38 2004

Using the webcam for over a year now, always good to see what the waves are doing. Could it be possible to take a picture every second and then play them back to back to get an idea of what the sets are doing? Cheers.

Fab cam if you want to see what the weather is doing down Gennith, but could do with having a shot from the top of the dunes at hill end to get a better idea of the size of the waves!! Still better than most of the web cams down Devon and Cornwall!!!

Hi Huw, sorry that you feel the need to find blame in a culture that is supposed to be free and accepting. It's not the webcams fault that more people are surfng now than ever! Wake up and chill!!!!!

I live in Herefordshire and would appreciate it if the cam refreshed earlier as it's a two - three hour drive to Gennith

Your webcam ruins the place with millions of kooks every time there's a swell. What happened to nice clean days on your own?

Wicked web cam guys, I agree with Rob, there should be another cam in Eddy's cos it can be a little tricky To make out what ur actually looking at, at times.

Webcam is handy if you live quite far from the sea, at least you can see if there's a wave.

Great webcam, would be even better if it refreshed at 5 or 6 in the morning to give me a chance to get there.
