Llangennith

Llangennith webcam frame grab
Surf cam courtesy of www.llangennithsurf.com.
The cam looks down from Rhossili Head towards Llangennith in the distance.

Facing South West it's a reliable beach break which is fairly consistent, and supplied with a local surf report from P.J's surf shop. The beach works up to around five feet before becoming unworkable. It does get good waves but often has a fairly powerless wave making it popular with learners and surf schools. It's also popular with longboarders. As a westerly facing beach, it tends to be a good wave indicator and will pick up signs of a new swell quickly.

Gennith by Guto

The length of the beach means there are always a number of peaks to be found. It's often more sheltered and cleaner to the right hand side of the beach towards the headland and 'Three Peaks' or Peaks as it's known.

Peaks funnily enough has 3 main peaks which hold their shape better than the main beach but swell direction and a long walk through the dunes can often make Llangennith a more attractive option.

At low tide, Llangennith is an excellent beach for buggy sailing due to the flat terrain and windy conditions. It has a camp site at the rear of the beach but it does becomes crowded in Summer so book/phone first! You have to pay to park here too so make sure you have a few coins in your pocket before setting off.

sunset @ Gennith by Guto

Car crime has been on the increase in SW Wales so make sure you take your keys with you when surfing or leave them in a secure place.

Hiding them under your car is no longer safe, as you can never be too sure of whose watching you. Never leave clothes, valuables or anything else suggesting you have surf equipment, in your car - put it all in the boot!

I've found Llangennith easier to get to than the southern beaches and love the idea that it's all about outdoor sports without the tacky stuff and thugs you get in Newquay nowadays. I'm off there next weekend, lets pray the price rises don't continue!

It was my first time I ever went to Llangennith Beach last year for my 30th birthday! We had a bbq in the sand dunes and went swimming at 1am and broke my toe on a rock lol the followin week I went back and took my son and I have to say I'm in love with the place! I'm going again tomorrow and it's supposed to be raining but I don't care! Wish I lived closer so I can visit the beach every day!

No place more relaxing than the campsite. King's Head pub is quality just a walk away. Only go peak season though!

You may be interested to know that the Hillend car park fee has gone up to £3 per day and that the season pass has gone up to £50 (from £30) last year. Pretty unfair price hike really - I mean did you get a 90% pay rise this year? And what choice do you have but to park there? Its a lot of money when you go up to three times a week. Whats to stop them puting up the price next year to £100?

I lived down Gower...used to love playing tennis on the beach, and relaxing and chilling by the sea! Also liked bringing down surf board!

I absolutely love surfing...Llangennith beach...was one of the best beaches I've been to...I brought my kids here too...I don't like taking them surfing with me usually because I am afraid it's too dangerous for them but surfing at Llangennith is good because the waves are smaller than other beaches...and I've got to say this site is really good too because I can learn about other people's experiences with surfing...

I love Llangenith Beach especially when the tides are high, because I love to bring my surf board down. I also love to camp and look for wood to make a fire.

I dont surf at Llangennith much but I surf at Caswell practically all day always. I surfed there today and swell was quite high. Surf in Langland is supposed to be brill too. Surfed Llangennith a few times - can be excellent when clean - long rides and great for Noseriding. When its cross or onshore in a big(ish) swell it's a nightmare and not really worth the effort. Lovely beach but can be a fair old walk!
Tue Nov 20 14:52:58 2007

Charles from Aberdare
Really powerful waves when it's overhead! But works best when the waves (sometimes!) come in clean. Do beware of rip currents and tide times when the waves lack punch, but they usually recover as the tide comes in/goes out. Can be hard work but can also be very rewarding surfing! Avoid choppy or messy conditions or you'll be fighting through a lot of waves! When it's superb - surfing heaven!

Been going down Llangennith for close to forty years(yes forty!) surfing and swimming. I`ve watched the dunes get eroded, not by the wind or sea, but by the thousands of people who have no respect for the place...It used to be a beautiful place - spoilt by exploitation.

Been a regular here for around 20 years. I love the break, surf the cold winters and thrive on big summer's awesome wave. Its got too commercial in the last few years.

Can anyone tell me the name of the camp site in Llangenith? The one that's just after the island where you turn left to the beach and that camp-site, and straight over the island is the one I'm after. It's on the left. I've stayed there a couple of time in the past but I forgot the name. I want to book it for a weekend surf trip in my camper this weekend.

Being part of the Llangenith surfing scene is tremendous! We enjoy it so much we have started running a surf school from the car park! With so many people in the water in the summer months we really believe in educating people about how to surf in a safe and enjoyable way. Nobody wants to see people get hurt so do the rite thing and take a lesson. Oh and please help to keep this place as beautiful as ever. Take your rubbish home... and leave nothing but footprints. Thanks

Cowabunga dudes! Had a "gnarly" surf at llangenith (how do you pronounce it again? ha ha!) last summer. Rented a "rad" board and wetsuit from PJ's and then went riding those Atlantic Rollers. I even got "out back" with the cool dudes and managed to share some waves with some other guys. It was so much fun! Partying with locals in the Kings I really felt I belonged there! I'm sat at my marketing job in London now, just dreaming of the summmer when I can get back to genith and ride those breakers! Keep on shreding dudes!

Great to see so many newcomers in the water but you guys need to read up on your surfing etiquette when in the line up.I have seen some horendous drop ins and collisions lately and it won't be long before some one gets seriously hurt.

Gennith is fair to middling. Good on a longboard but needs a bit more punch fro a shortboard. Been a Kook Slalom recently! All good fun though, peeople need to learn. Loving the new gennith website and webcam at www.llangennithsurf.co.uk

Try Cefn Sidan ! Into Pembrey Country Park or if you have a 4x4 try going thru the dunes onto the beach itself. Loads of empty space and big waves. Awesome beach and well worth a visit !

LGT is by far the best beach for surfing in Wales. No attitude, loads of space and mostly top waves. Nothing better than spending the summer in Llangennith. Hard getting out back on messy days!
Mon May 23 16:33:22 2005

The Gower, what can I say? Totally addicted to the place, great on any day rain or shine.

Paul from Cardiff.
I'm a novice, been going down Gennith for just over a year. I love the place, great open beach even better when the sun breaks through. Plenty of spots for the beginner so you don't 'P' off the better guys..... and gals! By the way big-up you lot some very impressive people out there. I'll be joining you out back one day! 'Warning' A mate of mine had his car broken into over Easter in the car park so be on guard. Cheers, Paulie (7'10).
Thu Apr 21 10:47:05 2005

The reason I loves Genith is cos I'm the only person that can get out back on a good day, so I can carve it up solo.
Tue Apr 19 11:01:49 2005

Alex, Coventry
Gennith is the only reason for getting up when it's still dark and driving 200 miles for a one-dayer. Better still for a w/e. Great beach, good break but lacks power - downsized my FCS fins and hopefully will be catching a few more from now on...
Sun Apr 17 19:05:15 2005

Mark Gabb from Mumbles
Long boarding rules at this break... I like doing stretches on the sand before I go in - you should see how flexible I am!! P.S. surfing is living.
Wed Apr 6 11:50:45 2005

Tom Soya, Swansea Centre
Not only is 'gennith a great surf spot, it's also a hub for the whole scene and great fun in the summer; a visit to the King's Head, followed by a camp-side bbq and beach fire (safely contained and in compliance with fire safety regs of course...) You can't beat it! Just wish we had more of a summer!
Fri Apr 1 13:39:19 2005

The paddle out is good for working off the beer belly! Plenty of space if you're new to the game and don't wanna drop in on a local.

Good for the grome and the best. Good break when it picks up. TOP location too. Well worth the drive if the swell is on!

This break is a weak and gutless closeout most of the time, occassionally gets good when the sand banks line up right. Certainly not the best break in SW Britain, for that try: Croyde, Fistral or Freshwater West.
Fri Mar 4 13:36:35 2005

We have a caravan in Llangennith, it's the best British break ever. Better than Cornwall! If you are in Llangennith and fancy an amazin session with the locals call in at caravan 209. Bring ur longboards!

My favourite beach to surf. It's the beach I surf the most as well. It's good when it's 3ft clean really good. If it's not clean and it's big, good luck to getting out the back.

Get's above 6ft and it'll take you an hour (...and a pair of shoulders like Ian Thorpe) to paddle out. Once outside crackin wave but be sure to remember your starting point or you'll drift miles (literally). Huge beach.
