Kirsty has competed in the World Windsurfing Championships, surfed for the Welsh team in the European Championships and achieved much success at both sports on a National level.
To the uninitiated, what is Kite Surfing and how did you get involved in the first place?"Kite Surfing has been around for about 4 years now. It started in France but has spread really well throughout Britain over the last couple of years. It's a new extreme sport whereby you use a small surfboard with straps and you are attached to a large power kite on 30 metre lines. This allows you to steer yourself. You can cruise along or do jump's the size of houses, including triple loops and spins."
What's the main aim - speed or tricks?"A bit of both really, though I'd say tricks mainly as you can pretty much do anything. There are so many tricks and manoeuvres that you can do in the air or you can just cruise along doing smaller scale jumps. Massive airs aren't essential - you can take it to whatever level you want."
How would a beginner get into Kite Surfing? "Flying small power kites is the best way to start and following that, go and get a lesson from an approved BKSA or IKO Kite Surfing school. The BKSA is the British Kite Surfing Association and the IKO is the International Kite Boarders Organisation. Most instructors in Britain are qualified by these organisations and so these are the names to look for. Normally a two-day course would be enough to get you up and going on a board. This will give you all the important safety instruction as if you started Kite Surfing without any instruction you could end up in a right mess!"
What would a beginner have to spend to get into Kite Surfing?"The essential pieces of equipment to start of with would firstly be a kite, not too big something around six metres. You'd also need a kite board and a harness; your bar and lines should come with the board. You could get a second hand set up complete for about £700 a new set up would be about £1000. It's definitely worth it though as once you have the equipment all you need then is wind! It's much more fun than wake-boarding behind a boat...."
What made you think of this challenge and why did you want to do it?
"I mainly do competitions and that can get a bit hectic so I thought I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do a crossing and I wanted to cross the Atlantic but I thought maybe I should do the Irish Sea first! So I thought of doing a crossing by myself and raise some money for charity while I'm at it, for the Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, Cardiff. Also I'd be the first person to attempt to kite-surf across the Irish Sea."
"What kind of support will you have during the crossing?
"I will have the Dale Sea safari rib from Pembrokeshire which is 30ft and does the trips around the coastal islands. It's one of the most sea worthy ribs you can get and the fastest in Britain. I've got complete confidence in that backing me up as a safety boat!"
How long will the crossing take?"I'm hoping for between 4 and 6 hours."
You're not looking at carrying food then?
"I will carry water bottles and water can be passed to me from the support boat but hopefully I won't need to eat anything."
What would be the ideal conditions for your crossing?"The ideal conditions would be anything between a westerly and a northerly wind and over 20 mph. It's actually looking quite good for either Thursday Sept 5 or Friday Sept 6. The wind is blowing in the right direction so all I need now is a good amount of it!"
It's called Kite Surfing but would waves hinder this attempt?"Kite Surfing can be done on flat water or in waves; you can still get over 40 ft of air in still water. I actually prefer waves as you can surf them as you would with surfing but you can do more manoeuvres."
Have you done any special preparation for this attempt?"I have been training with the safety boat so that we know the drill if I need to change a kite or there is another problem. I train for 3 or 4 hours whenever it's windy so that won't change and then eating lots of carbohydrates a couple of days before the trip."
How will this affect your day to day schedule?"I'm sponsored by Animal Clothing, Nintendo Game Boy Advance and F1 Kites so I do promotional work for them e.g. photo shoots etc. Then it's competitions and trips abroad and this is an extension on that. I've got three competitions next week and a trip away so I wanted to do this before getting into them."
This is what you do then?"Yes, I suppose it is, we have also set up a Kite Surfing school in Pembrokeshire with the help of the PBA start up scheme, so we'll be teaching Kite Surfing next summer as well."

Woo Hoo. Kirsty rocks, and she's a great inspiration to everyone! I wanna cross a sea or something kitesurfing one day. Or cross the River Stour maybe. That's only about 10 metres wide, but it's all I have in Sudbury.
