Horton

Horton Mart's verdict on this shingle beach suitable for learners.

This is a shingle beach sitting just around from Port Eynon headland which is sheltered from strong SW winds. It tends to produce a hollow shore break similar to Freshwater East in Pembrokeshire. It's generally a fast, hollow, right hander with the lefts tending to close out.

surfing @ HortonThe far left of the beach has a chunkier section for the more experienced surfer and some reef. It has the potential to be going off when other spots aren't producing the goods and is a popular wave jumping spot for windsurfers.

Horton can be one of the best waves in Gower depending on the conditions. Mainly there has to be an awsum swell of at least 10ft. South, SW or SE winds are preferred because they bring the swell into the bay from the channel. Be carful of it dumping at high tide tho. Best time to surf is when the tide is on the flow.

This break is great when Langland and Caswell are blown out and it is too small for Oxwich (which gets too crowded anyway). I don't see why there are people commenting about this break being 'secret', as it is one of the most well known beaches in the Port Eynon area. At its strong SW winds and 6-8 ft Gennith so I'm gonna check it out, let you know how it was.

Ben and Huw, grow up will you. Everyone knows about this break. There are no secrets anymore, this is the age of the internet. Deal with it. Doubtless you were kooks once. Live and let live, no-one owns the sea. If you don't like crowds, just wait for winter and enjoy the real surf.

Huw couldn't be more right if you keep telling every1 secret spots then they will become overcrowded and good surf sessions will become less and less!

Surfed Horton and car crime has put me off going there again. Was in car sleeping off hangover one day when some teenagers tried to have a go without noticing me under the board bags in the back! It needs sorting!!!!!!

Yea group of friends surfed there when Gennith was closed out, got our locks done in. Its sad realy. We rhondda boys who step out of the valleys to get some enlightenment but we can easy can easy step right back in.

Thieving gang presently working this area, I had the locks forced on my car here last week whilst out surfing. The thieves took nothing as I had nothing worth nicking. Cost a fortune to get the locks replaced.

Don't make the mistake of thinking just because you have an old car it will not get broken into if you park up to surf here.

Horton Rocks I had a 10 second barrel.

The water is full of mud here due to offshore dredging draining the sand from the beach, exposing the prehistoric peat beds.

This is the worst place on Gower for car crime. Be prepared for your car to be broken into if you surf here, worse it may not be there when you reappear from the water. Langland and Caswell may seem bad, but this is the car crime capital of Gower.

On its day this is one of the best lesser known breaks in Wales. Although as with the rest of the country watch out for the locals!

Great at low tide.

Crowds can be a problem here on a good day especially at weekends. Watch out for the shore dump at high tide onto the shingle and the wreck at low tide.

Watch out for the huge wreck here, have landed on it a couple of times. Ended up in hospital once with broken ribs.

Surfing is all about enjoying yourself and it does not matter where u surf what board you ride and who you tell about it. Keep surfin' and keep sharing.

I was brought up in Horton and learnt to surf there and it only gets going on a 4- 6ft swell and its all about the left side as that has the heaviest sucky rights. And this Xmas when the rest of the gower was blown out mush. it was going off with only 4 of us out, no crowds no meatheads just perfect offshore 4ft barrels.

Horton is a just a big close out, with a one second ride if you are lucky.

Get over it Huw! That's what the surfing community's about....you share your knowledge and everyone enjoys a good surf together. The surf in Wales is no secret!

Stop telling everyone where the good waves are! Surfing should be a voyage of discovery not a fully packaged holiday..... Get a life.

Good comment about close outs. Slade round the corner (east) is a better wave by a foot or two if Horton has a wave (needs SW wind at least 25mph).
