Last updated: 01 December 2008

Osprey, Wales winger and Amman Valley boy Shane Williams crowned his considerable sporting achievments by being voted BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2008.

Take a look at our Shane slideshow.

The Swansea-born inspirational player was named IRB World Player of the Year in November 2008 crowning a year in which he was a key member of Wales' Grand Slam winning national team and also helped take the Ospreys to victory in the EDF Energy Cup.

Williams scored decisive tries in four of Wales' five Six Nations wins and his score in the Grand Slam decider against France was the 41st try of his international career, breaking Gareth Thomas's all-time Welsh try record.

He faced some tough competition for the BBC award, including Olympic cycling gold medallist Nicole Cooke and undefeated world champion boxer Joe Calzaghe.

I think all those mentioned did a tremendous job for themselves and for Wales. One man who has not received the glory he deserves, however, is someone who has been around for a number of years. He has earned many honours, but he deserves something extra in this, probably his last year. The one and only Ryan Giggs.
