BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award 2008

Last updated: 16 September 2008

The BBC is to honour people working in sport at a grassroots level with the BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award 2008.

Everyone across Wales is invited to nominate individuals who have made a difference to their community through sport - pictured is Andrew Grey who won an award in 2007 for work with Milford Haven Gymnastics Club and Pembrokeshire Under-11 rugby team.

Now in its sixth year, the BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award, supported by Robinsons, recognises and rewards outstanding contributions by individuals at the grassroots level of local sport.

A local winner will be chosen in Wales, each BBC English region, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They will be joining sporting stars in a glittering ceremony at Liverpool's Echo Arena in December, where the overall UK winner will be announced.

So if you know someone in your area who goes an extra mile to change the lives of others through sport and deserves recognition, we want to hear from you.

You can nominate people who, on a voluntary basis, prepare facilities, roll the pitch, coach the juniors, run local sports leagues or work behind the scenes so that sport can be played and enjoyed throughout the UK.

A shortlist of nominees in each area will be chosen by the local BBC panel of judges, and a winner picked by a judging panel. Bursaries of up to £2,500 are available to winners of each regional award, to help them with their work in sport.

These 15 winners will join the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award ceremony at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, where an overall UK winner will be chosen.

Last year's overall winner was 85-year-old Margaret Simons, founder of Bardwell FC in Bicester.

She founded the club in 1964, bought the nets kits, balls, medical kits and refreshments from her own money, and was chair, secretary, treasurer, manager and coach to the 20 children in her first year.

Thousands of children between ages of seven and 16 have represented the club, which now has teams in four different leagues.

The judges said they had been "Impressed by her long-standing commitment (and) even at the age of 85 continues to give several hours of support each week."

Nominations for the BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award can be made at www.bbc.co.uk/sportsunsunghero until Friday, October 31.

The 2008 Awards, held for the first time at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, will be covered live on BBC ONE on Sunday, December 14. Programme, ticket and voting details will be announced nearer the time.
