The Clean-Up: In Pictures

On the evening of 15 February 1996, the oil tanker Sea Empress grounded in the entrance to Milford Haven. In the days that followed nearly 72,500 tonnes of oil spilled into the sea, polluting more than 200km of a coastline internationally famed for its wildlife and beauty. In the immediate aftermath environmental workers and volunteers began the task of clean-up and rescue. Here's a glimpse of what went on:

On the evening of February 15 1996 the tanker Sea Empress was heading into Milford Haven with a cargo of some 70,000 tonnes of crude oil. As the pilot navigated the vessel toward the mouth of the estuary a strong tidal cross-current pushed the ship towards the central buoy. After attempting to steer away from the buoy the Sea Empress hit the rocks at the mouth of the Haven, and the starboard hull was torn open by the impact. It immediately began disgorging it's oil into the sea.

We also agree that what happened was terrible. We are learning about this in Geography. And would like to let you know your comments have been very helpful.

I was involved with the clean up in Amroth, near Saundersfoot. I recall having to work with the tide and we were called out to start cleaning at all times of the day and night. I also recall it being extremely hot for a few weeks and we were all in layers-upon-layers of clothes, boots, visors and hard hats with our pom poms (used to clean the rocks), whilst people around us walked around in shorts.

I'm doing my geography coursework on this issue, and I find it hard to believe that about two weeks ago I knew nothing of the disaster. I think the BBC has helped enormously with my investigation, and therefore would like to thank all those involved in setting up this part of the website.

I remember the disaster well as I live only 20 minutes drive from Milford Haven. I was seven years old at the time and in Saundersfoot School. They made sure that all of the students understood what was happening just down the road from the school on the beach.

They also asked all of the students parents if they could donate any old towels as they where needed to help clean the birds.

My mum was also one of the thousands of volunteers that helped to clean up the birds affected by the oil. She used to tell me how so many birds where dying because they where suffocated by the oil.

Now I'm doing a school project that involves the disaster and some of the different opinions that I've read are very odd. The pictures bring back memories of how terrible this disaster really was. Linzi x

I was ever so upset when I found out about the Sea Empress. I am very glad it all has been cleared up and all wildlife is as free as it was.
I love our coasts and hate pollution!

I think it is terrible what has happened to the wildlife and the beautiful scenery which was spoiled by this terrific disaster my daughter is doing work of the Sea Empress disaster in school and the images of this are incredible. It is such a shame that this happened but I am glad to see that everything is now back to the way it was. Many regards. Patricia
