Saundersfoot Footlights

Annie - Saundersfoot Footlight Ever felt like treading the boards? Helen Wright talks about 'am dram' in Saundersfoot.

Saundersfoot Footlights developed in 1996 from Saundersfoot Musical Youth. Our first resident Artistic Director was David Owen, who remained in that position, directing the main show each year, until 2004 with myself taking over directing the annual pantomime in 2002. David retired in 2003, this is when I took over as Artistic Director.

We take members from the age of seven although our main show is staged during Spring Bank Holiday week each year, does not use the younger children unless they feature in the script as with such productions as Oliver and Annie. Their main performances are in the annual pantomime when up to 40 children give it their all!

All sets and costumes are made 'in house' by the excellent team we have. Every aspect of the production is covered by it's members and everybody has a good laugh. The ladies are always on hand behind the stage during performances with their safety pins!

Auditions are always well advertised and open to all. There are no rules about who gets parts - newcomers are just as likely to play the lead as long established members. In order to make things as fair as possible, no one person casts productions, this is done by a panel.

Footlights' resident Musical Director is Clive Raymond who works tirelessly with not only the cast but also the band, which he selects and rehearses for the main show. Unusually, last Christmas's show, The Wizard of Oz, did have a band although the pantomime only uses piano and percussion.

By performing The Pirates of Penzance in 2005, Footlights branched out from our usual type of show but it proved to be a great success. In 2006 we have gone in yet another direction with Barry Manilow's Copacabana.

Saundersfoot Footlights is a very friendly group with an excellent team producing family entertainment in the village twice a year.
