Jack reviews recent cinema releases and some of the best movies of 2005.
Lord of War A wily arms dealer dodges bullets and betrayal as he schemes his way to the top of his profession, only to come face to face with his conscience. But it's not easy to leave a life of girls, guns and glamour when no body wants you to stop, not even your enemies. The cast includes Nicolas Cage, Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan, Ian Holm, Ethan Hawke, Eamonn Walker and Sammi Rotibi.
This was a good movie. A little long at times, but it really opens your eyes to what a gun-runner's lust for money and power is about, and how governments are involved. This film would appeal to the most guys because of its fast paced, action-packed style. Nicholas Cage is very good; he suits the part perfectly with his rough but professional style, similar to that on 'Face-Off'. Definitely a great film, one to watch if you're into full-on action types, and it has a good storyline too.

The Longest Yard Pro quarterback Paul Crewe and former college champion and coach Nate Scarboro are both doing time in the same prison (after a funny performance by Adam Sandler involving an insult to a police officers ears and a car chase). Asked to put together a team of inmates to take on the guards, Crewe enlists the help of Scarboro to coach the inmates to victory in a football game "fixed" to turn out quite the other way. Cast includes the legendary Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Nelly, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Burt Reynolds. The Longest Yard is a remake of Burt Reynolds's 1974 version. There are comical moments which can have you in hysterics, Adam Sandler and Chris Rock make a good team and are great to watch; it has a good cast and great story. This movie could have done better with more sophisticated comedy but still lives up to it's name. It's definitely one to watch if you are a fan of Adam Sandler, but it disappointingly does not contain the same amount of charm that previous Adam Sandler movies contain. It could have done better but it is still one to watch.

Serenity A sci-fi movie: When the crew of the spaceship Serenity take on two new passengers - a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister - they get much more than they bargained for. The two are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, and the coalition will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The cast includes Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite and Summer Glau.
This film is funny, touching and exciting at times. If you are a sci-fi fan it will immediately draw you in; it may appeal to non-sci-fi fans as well, but this is unlikely because this film contains a lot of space action, and some people prefer a film which focuses on the story more. Even though the story is obviously the main part, it will appeal to the action films fan because it contains a lot of action and space fights. Some people like it, some people think it's rubbish, because this style of film doesn't appeal to everyone. You'll have to see it to find out for yourself. It contains good special effects which aren't distracting, it is quite dark and contains reasonably good acting from Nathan Fillion who isn't that well known. Not necessarily a one to watch unless you are a sci-fi fan or someone who enjoys films containing a lot of space battles. Great Movies of 2005 Sin City The Eisner Award-winning comic-book series Sin City comes to life in this live-action feature adaptation from director Robert Rodriguez and creator Frank Miller. Interweaving multiple storylines from the series' history, this violent crime noir paints the picture of the ultimate town without pity through the eyes of its roughest characters. There's the street thug Marv (Mickey Rourke), whose desperate quest to find the killer of a prostitute named Goldie (Jaime King) will lead him to the foulest edges of town. Inhabiting many of those areas is Dwight (Clive Owen), a photographer in league with the sordid ladies of Sin City, headed by Gail (Rosario Dawson), who opens up a mess of trouble after tangling with a corrupt cop by the name of Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro). Finally, there's Hartigan (Bruce Willis), an ex-cop with a heart problem who's hell-bent on protecting a stripper named Nancy (Jessica Alba). Featuring a who's who supporting cast that includes Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Devon Aoki, and Nick Stahl. Mickey Rourke gives a great performance and aided by his make up he makes a convincing street thug, he already looks the part and he performs the part amazingly just as Bruce Willis does with his role. The effects are amazing; they make the film seem very dark, which definitely adds to the mood - such as the way they changed the colours, like the white blood. The film is cram-packed full of quality action and well choreographed fight scenes that draw you into the movie and make you feel apart of it. This movie doesn't appeal to some people; some people don't understand the movie and can't feel as if they are a part of it. It is very clever and dramatic and contains an element of horror but not the of scary- type horror but gory. It is definitely a good film but it doesn't seem to appeal to many people; it would appeal to the type of people who enjoy adult comic books and enjoy dark films similar to Batman. Quentin Tarantino fans would enjoy this film as he was a featured director in the film, and it contains his gory style and witty attitude. Batman Begins
Christopher Nolan's 'Batman Begins' explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high-tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city. This was an exceptionally good film, it is dark and contains a small element of horror, it's full of action and good special effects. Christian Bale gives a great performance - he makes Batman seem very cool and mysterious and to a certain extent calm, a lot like his performance in 'Equilibrium' but with the added element of special effects; his performance seems enhanced. The way they stuck to the comic book story rather than the altered old film's story is in some people's opinion a much better way of doing it because the films then aren't just the same films but with different enemies, but a set of sequels continuing the story. The film is definitely worth watching and contains more than just "baddie-goodie" type action but contains a story of love, tragedies and achievements.

War of the Worlds This contemporary re-telling of H.G. Wells' seminal classic, sci-fi adventure thriller reveals the extraordinary battle for the future of humankind through the eyes of one American family fighting to survive it. It stars Tom Cruise, the talented Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, Tim Robbins and a host of others. This film is a very touching exciting and funny film, Steven Spielberg has done himself proud on this one. It's a very lasting film and has you pondering for days after watching because it is so clever and you still think about all the different aspects in the films, leaving many questions in your mind. It contains a lot of action and the special effects are (pardon the pun) out of this world. The film draws you in because you feel as if you can relate with the main character, who is performed amazingly by Tom Cruise, because he isn't someone special with super powers but he is just an ordinary guy with kids and a job and yet he manages to make it through the film alive and carry out some very heroic acts; this makes the viewers feel as if they are capable of doing this. The ending is very good, very clever and would hard to guess; it may be possible to miss the ending because it is so clever and so you might not realise it, obviously very thought-out by HG Wells. Steven Spielberg should be very proud of what he produced, this book needed to be a film merely to show everyone its sheer intelligence. A very good watch, it would appeal to everyone, it contains elements of a sci-fi with its out of this world aliens and Tripods; it contains elements of a war film, it contains elements of a 'touchy' film with the story of how this man loves his children so much. Therefore most people should like this film, it even contains an element of humour. Jack
