A new school year dawns. A new school. As we leave Cambria and Maradunium behind, there are many hopes for the future, great expectations of what this new school will bring to Carmarthen. A school which is:
More modern, and equipped with facilities such as: Bigger gymImproved canteenA more advanced sixth form annexMore technical supportA larger, more diverse reading libraryMore music practice rooms and a performance/display area for Drama, music and Art.Personally we hope for a bigger and better sixth form annex, this time quipped with a kettle!
The annex has many purposes:
To provide a quiet area for years 12 and 13 to sit down and relax in.A quiet area to study for exams/to do homework. To develop in us a responsibility for looking after our annex.A social place where we can get to know our peers. Our social life is very important. It is vital that our young minds are nurtured and given challenges! There have been numerous plans in the town for new developments. There are a couple that we were both very keen to follow up. A bowling alley and cinema, what a great way to spend a Saturday!
The young people of Carmarthen are generally a great bunch of people; however, there is a lack of things for us to do and places to go. Maybe more youth centres could be built, which would encourage a healthy attitude about the youth of Carmarthen.
There are many local bands in Carmarthen which you can preview in the music section of this site. There is a great sense of community in Carmarthen, many people encouraging the youngsters of today to do well.
As we all know, Cardiff is our capital city which holds many good things for Wales. One of these things is an ice rink; Cardiff is a long way from Carmarthen so we feel that to have an ice rink here too would make it more accessible for everyone in the south west.
We have a lack of clothes shops for teenage boys, no matter how much they want to deny it their image is extremely important to them!
As young people we to have our concerns, one concern is that the small businesses and the market may be forced to close if Carmarthen becomes too huge and commercialised. We are all proud of our heritage and Welsh background; however we need to find the right balance of new and old. Small businesses, from the shops in the market to the independent gift shops and boutiques that define our lovely town, make us very unique.
There are many things that we would like to bring from the old Carmarthen into the future;
The wonderful Welsh language, nothing says "Welsh" quite as well as a fabulous south west Wales accent!
Bilingualism in schools. Extremely important to keep our language alive! We feel that to re-enforce daily Welsh lessons in primary schools, would set the standard when pupils arrive in secondary school. If you are taught a language at a young age then you will carry it on into your adult life, perhaps?
The various town festivals. Arts, sports events, local village carnivals, harvest festivals, church festivals, music.
The charity work of many members of our society. There are many people who work together to help local and foreign charities, schools are usually involved in the process.
The strong links with local colleges and Art galleries.Overall Carmarthen is a great town to live in, no matter how much we complain. Now if we could just do something about the weather!

While I think that modernising Carmarthen is a great idea, I do not think making it a big shopping town is the best way to increase the amount of tourist visits to Wales. But it's a good article well done.

Let's hope that these prospective developments go ahead and do not fade away once again as they have countless times before. The ideas of building a cinema, bowling alley etc are far from new, and get whispered amongst the young population every 6 months or so and has done for years.

Carmarthen was a great town. I have lived just outside it for 7 years until yesterday. I went to school there (Q.E. High) and always went to town when shopping. Carmarthen needs more in the way of tourist attractions. It has a cinema and I definately think that a bowling alley and ice rink will go down well. The weather is normally nice there and I will miss the nice surr21:14oundings of the town. Tuesday 18 July 2006

I love Carmarthen, I used to live there and go back to visit now and again. Although I think its a great place to be, I do agree that there is a lack of activities for young people so an ice rink, bowling alley, cinema and everything else sounds great =D it would deffinatley encourage me to visit more often.
Also I agree the pic is great well done Anja

Well Dahlia I completely agree! If only topshop would come to Carmarthen! Hopefully if the council continues with their ideas for positive change we will eventually benefit from a larger range of shops. This would be good not only to satisfy our wardrobes but also to bring jobs and business to Carmarthen. I also want to say look how fab the picture at the top of the article is. Anja took that! xx

I reckon that Carmarthen does need a bit of livening up, seeing as its hardly got any good shops like topshop/topman, wallis, oasis, miss selfridge, e.t.c. I think that the new school will really brighten up the place aswell.

Hi Beth/other readers,
All we were trying to do in this article was to pin point what we thought Carmarthen could be like in the future. If you go to Q.E High, I go there too, and yes it is sometimes annoying with all the changes, but it something new to look forward to. I totally do not agree with the new Tesco's. It seems as though it is going to take over the small shops. Do you agree? Leave me a comment....and anything else you want to see come to Carmarthen. We could make a difference.

Well done Anja and Anna for completely summing up Carmarthen! I agree on a lot of parts of this, Carmarthen is a great place and the majority of the, er, 'youth' are really great people.
I love Carmarthen and I can't wait to see these positive changes happening.

Definitely agree with some aspects of this, especially the lack of activities for young people and clothes shops for boys (bless!). At the end of the day there's a massive market in Carmarthen that is going to waste as people have to go to Swansea or Cardiff to enjoy themselves. If the council actually provided things then young people wouldn't be quite to anxious to leave what is actually a nice little town! Though do agree about the weather!!!
