It's 9.30pm, mid October and I'm wondering what the hell I've let myself in for. It's as dark as Satan's soul, icy to the point of treacherous and to top it all, I've got a lung-destroying cold.
Let me tell you why I am here. Two words. Two words that when said out loud bring with it a torrent of abuse and suggests a breeding ground for persistent motor crime. Boy racers.
The police spit in disgust at the mention on them and motorists up and down the country would probably like to see them all locked up with the key thrown away.
But that's all bad-mouthing. Tonight I'm going to delve deep undercover and find out what makes 'boy racers' speed around at phenomenal speeds and run up gigantic bills on upgrades and petrol bills.
It's now 9.45pm, I'm in the front passenger seat of a 450 horsepower, nitrous fuel injected Nissan Skyline GRT4 and I'm as nervous as some playing Russian roulette. What's covering me with goosebumps? The fact that this Japanese beast is growling uncontrollably and that the speedometer only reads 60mph.
'How fast can this monster go?' I squeak. I barely have enough composure to speak. The mad driver of the mind-blowing machine looks at me and with a sinister sneer whispers, 'You'll see!'
And then we're off, I'm flung back into my seat like a rag doll as this monster catapults forward at break-neck speed. I glance back at the dashboard - 110mph! And we are only in fourth gear! By the time I manage to pluck myself out of the seat we are doing 145mph and the engine sounds like God shouting.
It's 10.15 and I'm sitting in a roadside café, with the man, Steffan, who has taken me on the greatest adrenaline rush of my life. He's allowed me to ask a few questions. I asked him 'Why do young people spend outrageous amounts of money on their car and them into unidentifiable speed freaks?
He told me, 'I don't know about everyone, but I see my car as an expression of myself. I work extremely hard and it's nice to have a car that stands out. After a hard day at work there's nothing like going for a spin in Maria (his car's name!)
'What do you say to fellow motorists who claim you frequently and deliberately speed?
Steffan replies, 'I admit that like any other person, boy racers do speed, but it's only to boost their macho image and to pit themselves against other boy racers' (or girls!). Everybody speeds, it's just that boy racers are victimised because of the loud music they play and because they drive fast at nighttimes, which keeps people awake'.
Is it all good fun or are they a mindless nuisance? You decide.

I cannot see anything wrong with fitting N2O to a car. If this is so wrong, we will be picking on Turbo's and Superchargers, next.
These so-called boy racer's spend a lot of time and effort on their vehicles, so why keep knocking them? I am aware that there are a small minority that race around giving the rest a bad name, but we should not tar everyone with the same brush.
I own a 2007 Ford Mustang, 1952 Ford Pop with a V8 engine, 1970 Vauxhall Victor with a V8, a Ford pick-up truck and a custom 1500cc Victory Vegas motorcycle, I am a HOT RODDER, DRAG RACER and BIKER all in one!
I am passionate about vehicles just like the generation of today. People who do not understand anything love to put it down, however, the truth is that most of them are green with envy.
We live for freedom and for choices, so don't take this away from them. Drive with pride and respect the law.

I'm 18, passed my test 8 months ago, drive every day , not one crash, not one speeding fine...But even so I go to college, work when I'm not at college, I spend most of my money on my car doing it up, valeting it, buying mods etc, its a hobby...and you ask why we do it? because its fun...

Sure, you can go bombing down a country road at 60-70 mph, but no-one can see what's round the next corner. Could be a horse, a cyclist, a tractor, someone broken down, oil on the road, you name it.
Spot on, Neill! Too many stupid motorists fly past my motorbike on blind bends! I ride to live! No accidents at all, for years! Seconds later I round the bend and the car is still in sight, passing a tree. I count the seconds until I pass the same tree. Usually it's about ten! The nitwit risked his/her life to save ten seconds! What was he going to do with the seconds if he saved them!

Nothing wrong with having modding your car and having pride in it. Why do people spend money on other things like houses. You can put your money into whatever you like.
About the reckless driving... I bet many of the wrecks with boy racers that happen could be avoided if people would pay attention. If someone wants to get around you LET THEM don't just sit there neck and neck with another car going 40 in a 45. Have some courtesy.

I've had modified cars since I passed my test, and I have a high performance Corsa, but only use its performance on the track. People that risk their life by racing on the roads deserve everything they get, but [you] shouldn't tar us all because of these.

A lot of people I know are boy/girl racers. I think it's really not fair to judge them all as reckless idiots...for most of them its about having a nice car to be proud of not breaking speed limits! Don't get me wrong I know there are a few idiots out there but they are the ones who spoil it for everyone else and give boy/girl racers a bad image!

I am 18 years old drive a Mitsubishi Lancer I've written off three cars (totalled) had one fine for careless out of three. I'm a volunteer firefighter and have spent a lot of time in junkyards - pretty cars and ugly cars fast cars and slow cars I've seen all types totalled...crashes they're unavoidable. If you happen to drive slower wrecks can turn into dents deaths turn into bruises if you wanna go fast go to a RACE TRACK there's plenty around. Crashes are just being in the wrong place at the wrong time the faster you go the more you RISK your car and your life.

I was a ton-up boy in my youth on motorbikes and used to play `chicken` over the X-roads with other M/C. I had double-figure accidents and was picked up for dead once in a pool of blood. When I became a car driver I picked up 9 points on my driving licence - I lost my only son on a motorbike (killed.
All I can say to these kids (boys and girls) is that the days will go by, and become weeks, and then months, and then years, and you will become older and wiser and accept adult responsibilities and behaviour and you will gaze in disgust and disbelief at the kids coming up who will be behaving as stupidly and inconsiderately as you once did.
Divert your energy and cash into something more useful and profitable than your silly dangerous pastime.

I own a 2.0 Astra Sport, full bodykit and LOUD stereo. End of the day put it next to a standard one and I dare you to say it doesn't look better. I agree most "boy-racers" are losers in 1.2 corsas with no power or stopping power whatsoever, just laugh at them, they are sad, but people who actually put money into it just to make it look better, where's the harm in that? It's the people with the boy racer cars that look after the cars and don't want to speed and crash them. It's the old people that I find speed...us boy racers go to roads where there are no cars to do it, but the police still don't let you - if they did it would keep us off the road...

I am only 25. I drive a high-powered Skyline and do have the odd quick blast. However, the only times I have been near a crash in my car, is with old people driving recklessly! They are the ones who are a danger on the road! Okay, there are a lot of little kids driving death-trap novas, corsas, saxos and so on. They are just waiting to be killed. But there are so many 'boy-racers' like me who spend a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of money in their car and try our best to ensure it doesnt get damaged whatsoever!

Boy and girl racers can be summed up in word: 'Pointless'. Their cars produce sound but no performance. One day I was driving along normally when I stopped behind a BMW 5 series and on the right was a boy racer with his ugly looking and loud sounding car. When the lights turned green, the racer's car produced a lot of sound, tyres were screeching...but the BMW had already got off quickly with a more quiet start and by then the racer was left eating dirt. To make things worse for him, I too pulled away from the racer...Now I'm no racing expert but I thought boy and girl racers were supposed to drive fast and get ahead at every opportunity...Clearly the best drivers are the ones who don't show off e.g. the driver of that BMW.

I'm 24, never been in trouble with the law, driving since 18 and have never crashed. People nowadays are led to believe that all young people are going to be criminals because they are wearing a hooded jumper and that because you take pride in how powerful and nice you make your car.
What's happened to the time where adults would talk to young people rather than stereotype us all as scum and criminals. I think once that problem has been addressed then maybe things will change, or maybe the divide has already been made and we have already been alienated to such a degree that it's no wonder the youth of today want to show off a bit as we get put down constantly.
When do you ever hear someone singing our praises. After a while we will start to believe this ourselves and then there's no going back. As i said earlier,a HOODED JUMPER! My GRANNY wears them and I bet yours does too. WOT A JOKE!

In responce to 'Niall' the reason they do up these cars is for something to do, something to take pride in, a hobby. I see far more older drivers speeding down the motorway then young drivers, the 'boy racers' car may sometimes be older, but far better maintained then yours, i could bet. They look after them, and you sayin old banged up cars, yeh first car was a old clio, second new clio, third new style megane 1.5, forth new style astra 1.6, and now rover BRM 1.8. Iv never had a crash, only ever scratched my first car and iv just turned 19. You get morons old and young, and ignorance, which uv kindly demonstrated. Dont comment on matters you have no understanding of painting us all with the same brush. Old women driving at 40/50 down the motorway is far more of a risk to all of us. When was the last time you heard of younger drivers crashing at 5mph into a river?

Im 15, and my brother has a "boy racer" car. Ive been cruising wit him before, and it made me realise how WRONG the public are about the "boy racers". I look around and i see modified cars parked, talking to mates, or sensbibly driving down the road. Then you see the idiots in their 200 dollar cars doing burnouts and drags. These idiots are the ones who are the problem! The police have got it wrong! The "boy racers" are the ones who look after their cars, not parade them down the street at 100 mile an hour! People have to realise this NOW!
Mon Mar 26 09:23:07 2007

There are two types of people that drive modified cars, the first group are more of the enthuasist they go to track days, they have powerful well maintained and well modifed cars - generally speaking they do abide by road traffic laws.
Then you have "Boy racers", a stupid term for them really. They meet up in public carparks they diff their cars around like it was some skill etc etc. I mean who goes to a meet at night - you can't see the modifications properly. These guys give the rest a bad name and even at Cruises you'll find its a minority of the guys and girls present that do this sort of thing. In my mind being a boy racer is all about attitude; fact is you'll notice a bright painted loud car doing speed more than a dark coloured luxury car. A 50 year old darting from lane to lane on a motorway is acceptable but a 20 year old in a Nova isn't.

Boy racers? You could call them that, but a lot of the cars have been made to look how the drivers want them to look e.g. a hobby! And most of them are young but I bet any of the comments above when they were young they drove fast! Point made?

Statistically its the 30-50 age group who rack up all the speeding ticket with reps being at the top of the list. So if the boy racers drive like such muppets then why are they not caught??
I myself drive a R33 GTR and have seen 170 on track. I'm not slow on the roads by any means but only when the conditions allow.
What gets my goat is the older generation who drive at high speeds through 20 + 30 zones. Speeding on the motorway may be against the law but there aren't any pedestrians to hit.
There are lots of “Boy racers” as you put it who give the majority a bad name. I don’t see t! he problem with them spending their money on their cars, would you rather it were drugs and drink? Not like any of them can get a house these days.

I personally believe there is nothing wrong with "pimped up g rides" but it is the silly driving thats annoys me, being friends with a few we often clash over the matter as well. Fair enough its nice to have a nice car but at the end of the day as much as people say we dont drive silly then why both wit inductioion kits and exhaaust that can make car go faster, sound noiser and waste for petrol. First of all the highest percent of crashs are caused by boy racers aged between 17 and 25,this is because they drive at silly speeds in un appropriate places. This is annoying cos as i am young n dont have rich parents i have to pay for my own insurance and its sky ... high. Second the noise wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt so late at night, i bet if i drove outside your house late at night with sums illy exhaust and loud music you would be furious. and lastly these cars waste ridiculous amounts of petrol. i mean dont people see what is going on with global warming and the oil shortage.

I have been a boy racer for 10 years now,and things have definetly changed in that time. It used to be loved by lots if you done handbrakes and doughnuts in a private car park, now its frowned upon. I think the scene has got too big. Every other car you see now is modified in some way. Ten years ago you had to go to a meet to see one. Too many cooks spoil the broth!

To the Corsa B driver - back up your claims with data please. What have you done to your ageing hatchback to make it anything other than a stodgily-handing and slow shopping car?
I don't understand why people bother spending so much money tarting up such crummy cars in the first place - spend 4 grand on 'doing up' a Corsa, it's still a Corsa, and your insurance will be far higher than if it was stock. For the same money you could get something better to drive and faster in the first place.
There's a very good reason why insurance costs are high for young drivers. Too many over-rate both their own driving abilities and the abilities of their cars. A lot of it is not just how fast they drive, but that they drive fast regardless of the conditions. Sure, you can go bombing down a country road at 60-70 mph, but no-one can see what's round the next corner.
Could be a horse, a cyclist, a tractor, someone broken down, oil on the road, you name it. No matter how 'pimped' your car (or how good, you could be driving a Ferrari), someone's going to get hurt. It's worth noting that older cars like the Nova have very poor crash records, much higher death rates than newer cars.
As for 'boy racers' getting all the attention - yup, you're right. I see no end of them pulled over by the police - illegal numberplates, illegal lights etc etc
On the issue of loud music and loud exhausts late at night, just think how you'd feel if someone came and played Radio 4 at top volume outside your house when you were sleeping off a late night spent 'crooozin'. You'd be pretty annoyed, wouldn't you.

I think that boy racers in general have a problem with authority. Every1 drives fast nowadays but the boy racers seem to do it in all the wrong places. They are victimized but that is down to lack of insurance, tax, etc on a few select idiots' cars. Also older people do get annoyed at boy racers but that is due to most of them being preety new to driving and young. However they drive like they have all the experience in the world. Its about time that both generations learnt to comprimise and maybe they could both teach each other something!!!!! Only then is this fued between boy racers and general society going to end!!!! The question is: Who will make the first move?

I have to say I cant stand people who break the speed limits. They are a danger to those around us, and, however fun they may find it, accidents can happen to the carefullest of drivers. The highway code was made for a reason, if you passed your driving test, you are expected to know this off by heart and abide by the rules. If you dont then you are a criminal (as sad as it sounds, its what I believe). So, when on the road, be safe! SLOW IT DOWN PEOPLE!!!

The so called "boy racers" I have seen here are just a show off. This is not real street racing. The body kit and sound kit doesn't make your car cool. And a good exhaust making their rusty engines sound like the enigne is tuned up doesn't mean anything. You need more horsepowers. Street racing here will never exist. Not untill as you put a lot of money and N2O in it.

Boy racers are fine until the speed they drive at makes it impossible to avoid a collision. Most are in-experienced drivers who have not experienced poor road conditions (until today perhaps). Killing someone- rarely themselves, leaves a dreadful feeling within..
