In 1960, under the leadership of the late Noel Davies MBE, the Pontarddulais Youth Choir became too old for youth competitions. The desire of the young man to continue as a choir was strong, so the Pontarddulais Male Choir was born.
The choir quickly developed to become the most successful choir in Wales.
Between 1960 - 2001, the choir won a record 11 firsts at the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, and one first at the International Eisteddfod, Llangollen. This was under Noel's leadership, a role which he handed to Clive Phillips in 2001, when he retired after 41 years unbroken service as Musical director.
Since Clive Phillips took over, the choir has gone from strength to strength, taking their tally to 14 victories at the National. In 2004, they achieved a 'grand slam', with victories at Llangollen and the Royal Welsh National Eisteddfod, where they were awarded the inaugural 'Choir of the Festival' (Cor yr Wyl) prize.
In 2006 they yet again won both the Male Choir Competition and were awarded the Cor Yr wyl at swansea. The choir is the most successful competitive choir in Wales.
Despite this, Clive has no intention of resting on his laurels, and plans for the future are in place for competitions and travel.
To achieve and maintain its standards, the choir always welcomes new members. Rehearsals are held at Pontarddulais Primary School, on Monday and Wednesdays at 7 pm.
Since its formation in 1960, the choir has never fallen below 100 members, and still contains a number of the original youth choir.
This is due to the camaraderie which exists, and the diversity offered by the choir with regular competitions, worldwide travel, performing at many prestigious venues, and working with stars, from Bryn Terfel to Pink Floyd - the choir offers something for everyone.
As a registered charity, the choir has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for many worthy causes, and will continue to do so.
