In Pictures: Building Methods

Last updated: 31 October 2006

The walls are local stone and are restored using building techniques at least a thousand years old. Cement is replaced with old-fashioned mortar and the walls are then finished with lime plaster, preventing damp and allowing them to breathe.

My father restored a very similar house in 1973 at Talbenny, I cement roofed the house in the traditional way, walked all over it with a broom pushing the cement into an even finish. Nice to see you used the traditional external wall covering too. So many people strip the walls and point the stone, that is not how they are meant to be. Loved the program, take us back in a couple of years and show us how it faired. Best regards, Tony

Really enjoyed the prog. I live in a similar farmhouse which has been 'modernised' and it was so nice to see a sympathetic restoration - wish very much that ours could look like that!
