Maritime Heritage Society

West Wales Maritime Heritage Society logo Peter Davison tells us about the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society, based in Pembroke Dock.

The West Wales Maritime Heritage Society was formed in 1984 and we have a workshop in Pembroke Dock.

The aims and objectives of the society are:-
1. To conduct and encourage research into the maritime history of the region.
2. To encourage the preservation of craft, buildings and sites of historical or local interest.
3. To seek to preserve artefacts and records associated with this history.
4. To retain and encourage the skills associated with all aspects of building, repairing, handling and the use of craft.
5. To set up a centre or centres where these craft, items and skills can be preserved and shown to best advantage.
6. To encourage members of the public to take an interest in and develop or acquire the skills mentioned.
7. To operate such a centre or centres as a viable economic enterprise.

In addition to pursuing our main objectives, considerable progress has been made towards a collection for display or use at our proposed centre. The collection to date includes:-

  • Already restored
    28 ft Coble 'Quest'
18 ft clinker built open motor-sailer 'Undine'
18 ft Trinity House Lightship Tender/Lifeboat 'General Picton'
10 ft pulling boat built by dockyard apprentices 'Rosyth'
    14 ft Firefly Dinghy 'Piglet'
    7 ft pram dinghy 'Bob'
16 ft Naval Fast Motor Dinghy '2746' built by Falconer Marine, Victoria, British Columbia. Restored privately under agreement.

  • Under restoration
52 ft Admiralty Steam Harbour Service Launch 'HSL 296'

    Sailing

Each summer the society's boats participate in a number of rallies and cruises within the Milford Haven estuary.

A variety of tools, equipment and other artefacts are being collected, along with a library of 700 plus books and 200 charts. Currently the books/charts are housed at Haverfordwest Library. The society welcomes offers to donate artefacts.

The work of the society is carried out wherever possible by volunteers in our Pembroke Dock workshop. Some tasks, of course, need the expertise of expensive professionals. Working parties are held on a regular basis at Pembroke Dock from 10 am and at other times by arrangement.
