Award winning poem
Last updated: 13 December 2006
A powerful poem by a South West Wales woman who has lost her sight and was born with a hearing impairment has won a national prize.
The work, 'Are You There?' by Carol Pollington from Newcastle Emlyn won her an award in a creative writing competition.
Actress Miriam Margolyes presented Carol with the award at a ceremony in the Charles Dickens Museum in London.
The competition was organised by the national deafblind charity sense, and entrants were asked to write on the subject of sight and hearing loss.
Carol has a condition called Usher, which means that she was born with a hearing impairment and lost her sight gradually. Here's the winning poem.
Are You There?
You are a blob
You are a faceless blur
You are a murmur
A meaningless sound
You move therefore you are
I breathe therefore I am
You are the arm that I hold
I am the hand that receives
your sign and touch
Are you there?
Is that You?
Let me know that you care.
