Neath's murder stone

Last updated: 27 February 2009

Below is an image of a well known local landmark in Cadoxton - erected in memory of a young girl in service. It was sent to us by Mike Davies. Email us your views.

Mike Davies sent us this image of the murder stone at a church in Cadoxton, Neath. Apparently part of the idea about these stones is that they draw the murderer out - perhaps the idea is that the guilty person's conscience might be stirred by these chilling words.

The stone says, '1823 To Record MURDER this stone was erected over the body of Margaret Williams, aged 26, a native of Carmarthenshire, living in service in this parish, who was found dead with marks of violence on her person in a ditch on the marsh below this churchyard on the morning of Sunday the fourteenth of July 1822. Although the savage murderer escaped for a season the detection of man yet God hath set his mark upon him either for time or eternity and the cry of blood will assuredly pursue him to certain and terrible but righteous judgement.'

Geoff Brooks has beautifully written and illustrated book, Stories in Welsh Stone of which Mary's story is one of 15 in the book. It is such a fascinating story
