Chased by the Dragon

Brian Morris and Raimi Lei

Last updated: 12 December 2006

Brian Morris of Clydach recounts his amazing life story and how he found the strength to walk away from the drug world. Brian has written his autobiography called 'Chased by the Dragon - Caught by the Lamb'.

After falling into the drug culture at age 16, my use of drugs increased steadily over the years until I was finally arrested for smuggling a kilogram of cocaine from Holland where I lived in December 1995. Nine months later I was given a 12 year sentence that was subsequently reduced to 10 years on appeal. I was able to put drugs behind me at the beginning of my imprisonment as a result of my Christian conversion and faith in God.

My beliefs that had roots in my childhood attendance of Sunday school, continued to grow despite hostile opposition from inmates and prison officers that my conversion was genuine. I got down to serious Bible study that challenged all areas of my attitude and behaviour. My credibility as a Chistian proved over time to be more and more evident to others and I was then able to help other inmates deal with their problems too.

I was released on parole in December 2000 after serving five years because of good behaviour. Three months before my release I realised I had a story to tell and was determined to write my autobiography. I had prepared myself well by reading many stories of conversion in prison from the chaplain's library. I devoured hundreds of these books in five years and I believe they inspired me to tell all and use it to help others overcome their problems.

I am now a father of five children after marrying Su and taking on her four young ones. I work as the caretaker of our new local community resource centre. I am constantly in the public eye and it is a witness to the community that people can really change and use their experiences to empower others.

Thanks for that Brian....I too used to be a engrossed in the drug world...including cocaine, marijuana, ectasy and speed. I have had no Christian upbringing whatsoever but some friends of mine have used the Lord's strength to save me! My Christian life makes so much sense and I KNOW that this is what life is about! Cheers Brian, take care.

It's really encouraging to see others be public about what God has done. I myself grew up in Hollywood, California. At...age 13 I left home to run the streets and party and fool around. Before I knew it I was using meth and coke and everything else that goes along with it. God had orchestrated me to move to Arizona where I became a Christian shortly after moving there. I have now been a Christian for 22 years. I was instantly set free from drugs and insanity. I too am married and have six children. Praise God and keep going.

Hey there, Bri...Great to hear you've become a thriving survivor! I'm sitting in a hotel in Bangalore, on a 5-week business trip, watching some cricket and Googling for something on my BlackBerry and couldn't believe my eyes when your article popped up. How's David, Ray, Susan etc? I've been living/working in the US for 10+ yrs so lost touch but delighted to see you're doing so well...!

I love to hear about people whose lives have been radically changed by an encounter with Jesus. Many are cynical about Christianity, but Jesus is as relevant today as he was 2000 years ago - Christianity is not about a set of rules - it is about asking God into our lives and saying sorry for where we have messed up - it really IS life changing - keep telling your story Brian!
