Cor Curiad Ladies Choir

Last updated: 03 May 2007

Cor Curiad

This choir has sung in lots of cathedrals - including St David's in Pembrokeshire, Exeter and Wells. But the choristers have also taken their music much further afield - travelling to Barbados for a Celtic festival of music.

Andrea Matthews tells us more.

Cor Curiad Ladies Choir was founded in 1995 and is now enjoying its 12th year of success.

The choir has always been commited to promoting the Welsh language, the tradition of Welsh choral singing and to use its talent to support local and national charities this commitment continues today.

Choir membership currently stands at 28 and the ladies rehearse every Sunday evening.

The majority of the ladies are bilingual but Welsh learners and non Welsh speakers are very welcome.

Prospective choristors do not require musical knowledge - just commitment, enthusiasm and a love of music and choral singing.

Since its foundation the choir has raised thousands of pounds for local and national charities and the ladies are always willing to perform at fundraising concerts and events.

The local hospice in Llanelli (Ty Bryngwyn) and the local Breast Care Centre at Prince Philip Hospital have benefitted from events along with Cancer Research and local residential homes for the elderly.

In recent years the Tsunami appeal benefitted significantly from the proceeds of a special fundraising concert.

The Choir is very commited to its local community and are frequent visitors to local nursing and residential homes and senior citizen day centres where they are enthusiastically welcomed.

Whatever the size of venue or audience the choir is equally happy - whether entertaining the elderly in small nursing homes to performing at large concerts or venues.

Examples of past events include concerts at St David's Cathedral Pembrokeshire, Exeter Cathedral and Wells.

In 2002 the choir travelled to the Caribbean Island of Barbados to take part in a Celtic fesitval of Music which was a memorable event. While October 2006 saw them visit Brighton to entertain forces veterans at St Dunstan's Residential Home for Blind Ex Servicemen and perform as guests of Brighton Welsh Male Voice Choir.

Following the resignation of the founder conductor Andrew Tamplin last year, the choir is now in the talented and capable hands of Musical Director Alex Esney, ably accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Jane Jewell.

It is extremely fortunate to have such a young and dynamic musical team.
