My ancesters from Carmarthen, Wales, sailed on a ship "James and Mary" from Milford Haven on June 1701. They arrived in USA in Philadephia, Pennsylvania, on September 1701. This was the beginning of Welsh React in America..There were 16 Baptists on Board. The captain's name was Davis.
My mother lived to be 101 in 1991. Her grandparents settled in Delaware...It has been a great journey of history for us. So when I found this site I just had to write. I am 80 years old and have a good history of Merediths and Frasher, Fraser, Frazier (our 19-year-old grandaughter is named Meredith) they spelt it many ways.
Cooper, Meredith and Frasher are our Welsh kin names. I am too old to travel so far, but in my heart I visit in spirit as I read about your country and my ancestors' home. Going so far away in those times on a tiny boat across the Atlantic. They had much courage and spirit for freedom. I am proud of them.

To Mark Embery: Mark I also attended Milford Grammar 1969 -1974...Jan Greenroyd (nee Blackwell) has set up a website for our class year as they are having regular reunions...I try to get home to Pembs every year to visit my mother and sister in Neyland and my other sister in Stratford Road in Milford. You do know what you have until it is gone - so make the most of our great county.

I was born in Milford Haven. I lived with my grandparents who name was Bevan, they lived at 28 Warwick Rd opposite Davies farm. Each morning I would see the cows walking up Warwick Rd and North Rd towards the mount which was in them days fields. It was a great place growing up. I went to CP North Rd School and Upper School...I will return one day for good.

I remember visiting a museum in Milford Haven sometime in the 1960s; it was based in a chapel-like building and housed a horse-drawn hearse and a hand-operated fire fighting pump. In the graveyard or garden, there were vehicles and two aircraft; one of which I thought was a ‘Sunderland’ flying-boat aircraft. Does anyone remember this museum?

I was born in Warwick Rd, Milford Haven. My grandfather was Dickie Bevans, who was chief engineer on the trawlers, such as Caldy, Gunner. My uncle was Reggie, who was a postman, for over 40 years. Mother was June Bevan, it was a great place to grow up - playing on the Rath, Pool, Pill beach, fishing off the jetty, Milford beach. It has changed over the years, but still like going back when I can.

Milford Haven had to be the best place in the world for a young lad to grow up in the late 1970's. Fishing, that beautiful pool on the Rath, Sea Scouts, ATC, tennis in the fog, adventures in the derelict docks (God Bless pre Health and Safety fun), AND none of us could pronounce Welsh let alone speak it!

I have very fond memories of Milford Haven on my visits there during my time in Dry Dock with the Army LCT's. I had a very good friend there by the name of Elizabeth (Libb's) Adams. Her family lived at Bryn-Tirion, Haven Head.
I hope I spelt that correct it has been a long time since I visited there back in '63 to '65. I wonder if any of the family members are still in Milford...Again great memories of Milford and that cafe on the main street on the right as you went up the street, it had, if my memory is correct, some steps going down the side of the cafe off the street.

My Grandfather was Captain James Gale. He was a sea captain out of Milford Haven. He received the DSC during WWI and was also a hero during WWII. He unfortunately passed away when I was only a baby, so I never had the chance to know him. If anyone has any memories of Captain Gale (Captain Tempest, as he was sometimes called), please let me know.

I was born in Milford in 1942 and lived there until 1974 when I moved to Norway. Milford was a great place to grow up with the pool on the Rath (which my father Boss Phillips opened) the woods, the beaches, the docks, the Pill and all the places my friends and I spent most of our time in our early teens.
The dances at Pill Social centre on Fridays were also a great place to be. After having lived in Norway longer than I lived in Milford I still miss the place a lot and try to visit at least once a year.

I lived in Hakin (Haven drive) for a lot of my younger days, then moved to Marloes for a few years, then moved to Rugby. I now live in Australia and have some good fond memories of Tish, Marloes, Dale and the Milford Haven area and still a lot of family and friends who still live there. Best wishes to all my family and friends and everyone who knows me. It is a cracking place to grow up in and I hope it doesn't change too much.

In February 1943 at 16yrs old I joined the Merchant Navy as a 3rd Radio Officer. Joined my 1st ship in Barry, sailed to Swansea and loaded a full cargo of cased petrol for North Africa. Sailed to Milford Haven for a Westbound convoy. Milford at that time was also a base for the anti sub patrols by Short Sunderland Flying Boats.Later in 1944 I returned to Milford to join another convoy bound for the USA. There was a lot of naval activity in Milford Haven during WW2, unfortunately I never had the opportunity to have any shore time during that time period.

I lived in Hakin from 1968 to 1979. Went to Hubberston VC and then Milford Grammar (as it was then). Emigrated to Switzerland. Great childhood spent in and around the fantastic coast line. Cycling up to Sandy Haven and Herbranston in the summer. Too many friends to remember but if any one does remember me, love to hear from you.

In 1931, at the age of nine, I moved, together with my mother and sister, to Milford. My father was Captain Norman Parsons, and his ship, SS. Pacific Transport, was laid up, first in Dale Road, later off Newton Noyes, and finally at Pennar Gut. My mother lived on the ship with my father, Captain Norman Parsons, while my sister and I were boarded out with Mr and Mrs Albert Mathias at Beach House, Pill...on my eleventh birthday, we left Milford, my father's ship having been sold to a Greek shipping company. From the age of nine to eleven, I went to North Road Boys' School. The Headmaster was Mr Cattenach and my teacher was the formidable Mr Davies.

Having just been back in the town for a a family funeral, memories came flooding back.
Gelliswick beach and the summer regatta, the beach full of families, with the viking ship coming around the bay, walking the greasy pole, and always falling into the sea, swimming out the 'floats' moored off the beach.
Swimming and meeting mates at the Rath Pool.
The annual carnival, the assorted floats from all over the town, and the massed bands that came from afar, the fair straight afterwards.
Walking up 'Front street', enjoying the peace and quiet on a Sunday evening, and then walking along the Rath.
This week, the town was packed with cars, loads more people than I can ever remember and although the same place, very different to how I remember, but then I have been gone since 1986

Hi I lived in Neyland and Milford Haven all my life, and went to Milford Haven High School...I will always have memories of myself and a large group of friends swimming in the river, camping in Haslebeach, or the Wheire as we used to call it the (nature trail between Neyland and Milford Haven)...I loved it going shrimping and fishing and cooking what we caught over an open fire - lovely. I'm 19 now and live in Newham, London, with my husband and miss Milford with every heart beat but I know I will return soon. After all no one stays away it's like someone or something calls you back every time you leave. lol.

My Grandfather Harold Baker was a fisherman out of Lowestoft in Suffolk, the fishing trip before what was to be his last, a galley door had hit him on the head during rough seas.
My Grandmother was concerned he had a bump where the door had hit him but could not get him to get it "seen too", sadly he was taken ill during his next trip and was taken in to Milford Haven. My Grandmother Ruby Baker had to take a train from Lowestoft to Milford Haven, this was in June 1945 and she had never been far out of Lowestoft. She said the train was full of troops and she had to stand most of the way, I guess she would have had to change trains quite a few times as well. She got to the hospital on 23rd June 1945 only to find my grandfather had died 15 minutes earlier. I have never been to Milford Haven, but it plays a part in our family history.

In the very late 40's and early 50's I spent my school holidays with my grandparents, in what must have been the last thatchted cottage in Robert St or even in Milford. Opposite us lived two of the most beautiful people I have ever met, Mr and Mrs Sam Britton. Mr britton took me to see the fishmarket sale. It was, in what seemed to me to be in the middle of the night. To this day I can see box after box of fish - some of the fish bigger than me, and men walking on the edge of the boxes every one shouting and slapping labels on the fish. Then I was taken up to the canteen that seemed to hang from the roof. From there I looked down, and only then did it sink in, it seemed that there was boxes of fish for as far as I could see. That sight, sound, and smell will be part of my favourite childhood memories of Milford, and I have many more, thank you Milford.

I lived in Milford on the Mount Pleasant Way estate from 1966 to 1970. Having moved from the mining valleys we thought we had arrived in paradise. The beaches, countryside and scenery were spectacular and Milford was a very friendly place. We roamed in Hilton Woods and spent many days fishing in the Haven off Ward's Pier, The Mackerel Stage and the Sleek Stone in Broad Haven.
My heart sinks when I walk the old dock area where the fish landing sheds seemed to stretch forever and I now see the new developments that seem so barren.
I attended both the Lower and Upper Central schools and have fond memories of many friends and teachers, some of whom I still visit every 2 - 3 years. Reading the current goings on in the town in the Milford Mercury it would seem the old place has fallen on harder times. Would love to hear from old friends Johny lewis and Stephen McGrath.

I went to Milford Haven County Grammar School 1941-1945 when the headmaster was Mr Finney. I had moved from Middlesbrough as my father had been recalled to the merchant navy in those difficult times and was regularly running out from the Mine Depot.
A kind family called Harris made available to us a little cottage on their farm at Waterstone. I visited the town a few years back and was sad to see the old school in a very bad state. I remember catching rabbits on the farm and taking them to school in my bloodied school bag - sometimes swapping them for a piece of hake! I lost contact with my school friends. We would often go to the "British Restaurant" instead of school dinner.

F.T.A.O. Pauline Owen. Only just found this page! I'm sure you had lots of information about Robert Street, but just in case. I was born in Robert St. in the 1960's lived there til I was a teenager. I know it was originally called or part of it at least 'Jubilee Terrace'. Where the car park is now used to be a terrace the houses were knocked down 70/80's if my memory serves right. On the corner where the estate agent is now used to be a haberdashery/fabric shop with high wooden shelves and everything you could need for sewing was in there. On the corner turning up to Dartmouth street w! ere two shops, one closed the other remained open for a time as a grocery/sweet shop. On the corner where the paint/interior decorating shop is was Sharpels the clothes shop.
There was a guest house in Robert Street many years ago, but I only have very faint memories concerning it and I could be wrong about details! Hope this is of some help.

I was interested to read Terry Peters' letter. My grandfather, James Radmore was the son of George Radmore and his wife Louisa, who ran the "Hibernia" in Point Street. All their children were born in Hakin.
George was baptised in South Tawton in Devon and comes from a Devon family. Louisa (nee Mathias) was born in Newport, Pembrokeshire.
The only son of George who went to sea (as far as I am aware) was Archie who was temporary skipper of the armed trawler "Bracklyn" when he was killed in action in 1917. He is buried in Lowestoft cemetery.

Hello,
I am sorry to use this site as a conveyance for my question, but I just do not know how else to find any information on my gr.uncle Thomas Blackler. He was born in Liverpool in 1897, but somewhere down the line he moved to Milford Haven, and I have become very curious about his life there. I know he was there late 30's to at least 1942. He was not married but lived with a lady. He was I believe employed on the fishing trawlers.
Anyone have family who worked with him, or know where I can start researching.
I would be very greatfull for any information. I am sorry again to use this site for my situation.
Thank you

I was born in Milford in 1935, so grew up with the fishing industry. What a wonderful place to grow up in, full of magical mysteries. My father and three brothers sailed out of Milford with one brother being George the Boat Man. What a character he was and what a tale he could tell about the trawler men, I never tired of listening to him. Would be interested to hear if any of you oldies remember him.

I was born in Milford in 1940, and there couldn't have been a better place or time for a boy to grow up in - sailing with the Sea Cadets, taking trips out to the trawlers on the T.O.A. boat, collecting all sorts of maritime artefacts off ships newly arrived for breaking up at Wards yard, "pleasuring" on a trip aboard the Milford King with my uncle, who was skipper. Anyone interested in the history of Milford and especially the fishing industry is invited to visit my website www.milfordtrawlers.org.uk

(Long lost cousin of David Marchant - above). Born and grew up in Milford Cherished memories include: The Swimming Pool on the Rath and spending hours picking up litter to get in for free the next day. Building 'dens' up the Gunkle(now flattened, sadly). Whole days spent roaming around Hilton Woods. Crabbing and messing around in the mud in the Pill at low tide, clambering over the 'rocks' in Scotch Bay and of course all the great Milford characters (what ever happened to Affie the paper 'boy'?). It's a long way from L.A. - in every sense.

I have wonderful childhood memories of Milford Haven, Wales. My grandparents and aunt and two cousins lived in Milford, and my mother brought me for two extended visits. Through the eyes of a child, the public built-in swimming pool seemed the largest I have ever seen. By the water I was used to at home, I was amazed how many local people actually swam in that absolutely frigid water. I remember vividly my grandparent's home, heated by coal at the time, and the daily treks outside to bring coal in for the fireplaces. I remember Grandpa's green house and raspberry bushes, afternoon tea, and the wonderful people met in Milford.
