I have very fond memories of the horse fairs, travelling there from Lampeter by iron-tyred dray with our piebald mare Elizabeth jelling on at a spanking trot. There was a very charismatic and flamboyant person I had the pleasure of knowing...a true Welshman, Julian Cayo Evans of Glandenys Mansion, he was famed for his spotted apaloosa Snow Leopard and show-winning sec D Welsh Cobs. We used to meet up at the horsefair down a few pints in the Black Lion and set the world to rights. Now those WERE The Good Ole Days. Thanks for the Happy Memories LLanybyther. I went to Highmead School which was a mile from the village. I have many happy memories. Sadly, I have lost touch with all my friends that I made while I was there.

My grandfather William Fox was born in or near Llanybydder and worked as a gardener(?)on the Evans estate. Would be grateful to get any info?

As a young girl I used to live in the Vale of Teifi pub. As I now live in Dorset I miss the lovely welcoming village as I remember it to be. It now looks totally different, not so quiet.

Merlin Astley-Jones ex Llanybydder now New Zealand
I lived just outside Llanybydder in Ty Mawr for just 5 years and they were some of the best years in my life.
Coming from the mining valleys of South East Wales, Llanybydder was very much like the 'Valleys' were when I was a child. The people are lovely and I've made many lasting friendships which even now, when seperated by 12,000 miles, are still as strong as they were when I left for New Zealand.
You could hardly call Llanybydder the meca of 'anywhere', but it has a character all of it's own. Each pub had it's locals. (sad to hear of the Highmead closing). The mart buzzed with people, accents from many parts of Wales and beyond. Christmas parties for the kids in the Lion, Halloween in the Cross. Late summer nights in the Tan!
Winter floods, wondering wheather the river would burst it's banks (and it did sometimes) and hot summer's day walking Mynydd Llanybydder. Seeing for miles all the way from Pen-y-fan in the Beacons to the Preseli mountain and way off to Cader Idris in the north.
Doing business in Llanybydder was all together 'different'. Don't expect the urgency of Cardiff, nor the impersonality either!
I miss Llanybydder and everything there.

My grandparents lived in Llanybyther and every year, as a child, I spent my holidays there. I have so many memories.
My bedroom window looked over the river. From the bridge we threw sticks and watched the enormous fish. From under the bridge we paddled in our wellington boots - if the river wasn't too high - and caught 'minnows' which we kept in jam jars until it was time to go home for dinner. We always had more minnows in our boots when we got home!
At the bottom of the long kitchen garden I climbed the plum tree and looked over the meadow where sheep or horses were kept ready for the mart. In the winter if we were lucky, the river flooded the meadow and then froze and we could go ice skating.
I loved going to the horse sales. My grandfather promised that one day he would buy me a pony and every time I choose one, although I never got it!
My mother worked for a while for Evans Bros and had plenty of stories to tell about the farmers. She and my father got married at the church and had their wedding reception at the Black Lion.
On Sundays my gradfather went to the Vale while dinner was cooking. I was sent to fetch him when it was ready and always had trouble getting him home!
I could go on for hours...
Both my grandparents are buried in Llanybydder but, unfortunatley, I do not get back there very often.
