A new season of guided walks are being held at Llanelli's award-winning Millennium Coastal Park, with a programme of mini tours drawn up for May and through the Summer.

Rangers are escorting people through different parts of the park, pointing out areas of interest and explaining the wildlife. The Coastal Park is the biggest land reclamation project in the UK, stretching for 22km along the West Wales coastline. More than 2,000 acres of contaminated and neglected industrial wasteland was transformed into a major tourist attraction, pulling in half a million visitors a year.

Sections of the park in Llanelli, Pwll and Pembrey are included in the programme of walks, with a number of them taking in local nature reserves.Carmarthenshire County Council is driving forward the programme with support from the Countryside Council for Wales, coming at a time when the authority is promoting the countryside as an "enjoyable way to improve health and fitness". This has also included improving footpaths an accessibility on the council's roster of 'county walks'.

Walk Details:

  • May 26: The 'Dune in Flower' walk will be held at North Dock dunes local nature reserve.

  • July 9: Explore the specialist flora of the former ash pit and at the local nature reserve at Pwll.

  • July 30: The Cwmdeithas Edward Llwyd guided walk, conducted in Welsh, will look at insects and plants at sand dunes in Pembrey Burrows local nature reserve.

  • August 19: An historical guided walk around Machynys.

  • September 18: The programme ends for the Summer with a Welsh Sosbanelli guided walk in the Pembrey Burrows local nature reserve on September 18.

Carmarthenshire council's Senior Parks and Countryside Manager Elwyn Hughes said:
"Using the facilities in the Millennium Coastal Park is an excellent way of keeping fit and enjoying the local environment at the same time.
"It's a beautiful park with some spectacular scenery. "The guided walks offer a unique opportunity to learn more about the area and I would encourage anyone to get involved."

The programme comes just weeks after the park beat off competition from across the UK to win the National Lottery's 'Amazing Space' award.Thousands of votes were cast for it to take the title in the awards, held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Lottery.
