Athletic Cricket Club

Cricket players

Last updated: 25 October 2006

Hywel and Jeff Watts of Laugharne look at the history of the Athletic Cricket Club.

Beginnings

"The LACC came into being in 1889. A cricket club existed for around 20 years before this however. The first AGM was held on April 28 1889.

The club got the current 'Woofords Park' in 1953 - where they play to this day.

In 1959 the LACC organized the first annual carnival, making a profit of £79.45 that year.

Centenary

1989 was the clubs centenary year. Glamorgan CC XI team played Laugharne. Two of the players were Tony Cottey and Robert Croft - both are internationally known today.

David Hemp - Captain of Glamorgan played as well, though somebody spelled his name 'Help'.

Today

The Cricket Club no longer runs the carnival after 46 years, it has become the responsibility of the parent organization the Athletic Club.

The ground of Wooford Park has been given to the Athletic Club through an agreement with the community so the cricket and rugby clubs will have somewhere to play for years to come!

Now part of the Gwili-Taf Midweek League - the LACC has just finished a successful season seeing a fair few wins amongst local contenders".

I have many happy memories of playing for Laugharne in the 70's and early 80's. I started as a junior with John Jones, Jay Howells, Roger Hunt, Gary Pearce, Mark Done, Wayne John, Richard Waters and many others. I remember Frank Robinson, Wallace John and of course Jeff Watts who transported ridiculous numbers of the team around in his blue Capri. I still have a couple of photos of this successful junior team and others of the seniors from the later part of my time with Laugharne.

My father Jim Tucker and brother-in-law David James used to play cricket for Laugharne and I can remember when I was a little girl helping my Uncle Jack (David father so not really uncle) do the teas at the ground in Orchard Park. I also have a very treasured photo of my dad with the cricket team a few years before he died. It is such a shame that the carnival is no longer - as again as a little girl I used to enjoy the dressing up in the fancy dress, or being an attendant to the Fairy Queen, and Rose Queen. One year I was on a float when we were dressed up as Snow White (who was Vicki James my sister) and seven drawf and I was dopey, still have that picture lol

If anyone has got old photographs or would like to contribute an article relating to the history of the Cricket Club I would be delighted to hear from them.

A very nice surprise to come across these items by Harvey and my cousin Irene. Dad died two years ago on 24th Jan and his interest in the club lasted to the very end. They were indeed very happy days which I remember well. I have a great photo of that team taken by Gwynne Brown (1959 I think). I hope that you remember my 7 wkts for 5 runs at Saundersfoot as no-one else does!

I remember Frank well. He was a real stalwart of the club. His son Anthony opened the bowling. Colin Watts, Tony Harry and I were 3 more 15/16 yr old regulars in the early 60's. We were sneaked into pub gardens for a half of shandy or two on away games. There were a number of great characters in the side including Dai Raymond, Dai James [always a fag on the go in the slips], Barry Jackson, Dai Beynon and the sophisticated openers Keith Thomas and Jeff Watts.Great days!

My Uncle Frank Robinson was a lifetime supporter of Laugharne's cricket club and umpired matches regularly and helped cut the grass and other things too. My father Ivor Coles would often play with Laugharne's team when we came over for our summer holidays in the 1950s and 60s.
