This programme first broadcast Tuesday 15 Feb 2005It's no secret that writer and novelist Brian John loves his home patch of Pembrokeshire, having left the security of a job as lecturer in geology to live here. Completely smitten, this 30-year love affair spanned his 'Angel Mountain' books, following the fictional life of Martha Morgan who lives in the shadow of Carningli, the mountain of angels, near Newport.
he fourth episode in the series, 'The Man from Angel Mountain' (Carn Ingli) takes a look at Brian John and his life in Pembrokeshire. Brian himself lives at the foot of Carningli, with his Swedish-born wife, Inger, who runs a candle-making shop from their home.
"It's a magical place I think," says Brian. "Not only to me but to a lot of people who look on Carningli as their own private mountain. Wherever you are in this area, Carningli draws your eye. It's a natural summit, and although it's only a thousand feet high, it's rocky and rugged and very exposed here."
"It's rather small, it's intimate, it's not overpowering or intimidating in any way and that's why I think people find it easy to identify with it as rather a special place."
There aren't many people who know the Pembrokeshire coastal path better than Brian either. As the author of the official Coastal Path guide, Brian has been walking and writing about the coastal path for the past 20 years.
In this programme Brian meets with Jac Williams, whose fascination with Morris Minors means that he has a 'surgery' for a handsome collection of cars at his garage at Pontiago. Brian also goes on to Strumble Head in Cardigan Bay, where the lighthouse can be seen from 26 miles out to sea.
Then, in Porthgain, he meets Roy Lewis, who shows him various plants such as horsetail, the longest living plant in the UK, which he calls 'the original brillo pad'; because of its high silicon content it's highly efficient in cleaning kitchen utensils. On his travels, Brian also takes in the majestic Pwllderi cliffs.
"How about that?" he says. "This is one of the most spectacular views in the whole of Pembrokeshire, I think. It's probably one of the reasons why people like me love Pembrokeshire so much, why we live here."
