This programme first broadcast Tuesday 8 Feb 2005"I was in a town once for a couple of days and my feet got sore on the pavements. It was about as much as I could stand. I like the turf under my feet... The towns have so many facilities that we don't have in the countryside, but then we have got so many other things. I'd miss the wildlife and open spaces, the birds, the sea and the cliffs."
When you see Derek Rees' 'office' it's easy to see what he means. Born and bred in full view of Ramsey Island, he now works there, negotiating the tricky Ramsey Sound, one of most dangerous stretches of water around Wales, to reach his workplace. He features in Against the Flow, the third programme in the series.
Derek is whatever the island needs him to be. He's the postman, the boatman, the goods importer, sheep shearer, horse trainer, building maintenance man... and just about anything else that might come along the way. The latest project is introducing horses to the island, a project Derek and his colleague Rick take on with success. The island, an RSPB reserve, is also home to sheep, rabbits and a sense of peace.
"I find it a source of inspiration every time I go there. I feel as if I've had a weight lifted off me. At home there's the office, the phone rings, and there's all the aggro and the taxman. And here I'm as free as a bird," Derek says.
The programme features another local resident, Ffion Rees. Having left to study German at university, she is now senior skipper for Voyages of Discovery - a boat tour company based in St Davids.
Every day during summer she takes parties of tourists around the island informing them about Ramsey's history, geology and wildlife. There are caves, grey seals, porpoises and birds to see, as well as a wealth of local history to take in. And the tourists flock to experience the unique trips.
Between them Ffion and Derek paint an unforgettable picture of life around Ramsey, a magical island at the tip of St Davids.
Land of Dreams is an Element production for BBC Wales.
