Phil from Los Angeles
In 1993, I drove from Los Angeles to Amarillo on as much of the original road as I could find. I stopped to explore an old abandoned diner near Vega, TX. It was well before the current Route 66 craze. There wasn't another soul in sight. I poked around came across and saw an old Grape Nehi bottle half-buried in the dirt. I dug it out and cleaned it off. I still have it today.

After returning home from Vietnam in 1968 and after recuperating from war wounds I hitched hiked across America for three years to clear my head and found Hwy.66 was the best for that, from Chicago to L.A. Travelling that way was very refreshing, especially in the 60's & early 70's, but today it'll take a lot longer to get a ride & you'll have less company on the road. What's left of the hwy.is still wonderful to travel.

We drove from Santa Monica to St Louis July 2006. Lots of diversions to Grand Canyon, Memphis and finished up at our friends' apartment in South Carolina.
We are going to complete the Route 66 experience in 2007 from Chicago to St Louis. There is talk of changing the Route's name (why?) There is also talk of going metric (again, why?) Just leave everything as it is.
The very best holiday ever. Had a blow-out in the middle of the Arizona desert - no panic. A friendly local helped us locate the "doughnut" which was under the driver's seat - where else - and we drove on had to change not only the tyre, but the whole vehicle also.
We have travelled the world (literally) on organised holidays, but this trip beat all the others into a cocked hat.
Some motels better than others obviously. But everybody helpful. Locals wanted to learn all about us. They mostly thought we were Australian (we're originally North Londoners). We had at least one stomach-aching laugh a day. I wish I could show you all the photos and video, especially those lovely, big Harley boys who will let you sit on their machines for a photo.
Please don't think about doing it - just do it. You'll never regret it I promise you.

Drove from Phoenix to Tuscon, down to Tombstone, across the border to Nogales (Mexico), then the length of Arizona to Flagstaff and finally to the Utah end of Monument Valley. No problems at all ... then got very lost on the shortest part of Route 66 passing through Flagstaff on the way back... well can't get it right all the time. The "Catus Moon" Rules OK

Don't tell me you never went to Williams Arizona, gunfights, bank robbery, steam engines, road closures; then head for Kingman on your own on R66 as everyone else is in a hurry on the interstate.

My wife and I travelled along Route 66 from St Charles Missouri to the Grand Canyon in 1963. No way to describe the wonders we saw on the way. It is hard to believe that little of this road is left. Most of the place names I have now forgotten, except for a place called Two Guns, Arizona or New Mexico.
There are too many dim memories to trust to paper with any accuracy. I just feel very lucky to have made this trip.

Santa Monica is "the end of the line" on Route 66. We've traveled "The Route" from Texas to California about every three years since 1961. Santa Monica Beach is my brother John's (who lives in Northridge California ) place for jogging.
