The Aberdulais Basin is one of the most attractive locations from which to start a walk along the Neath Canal. This beautifully constructed bridge was restored by the Neath Canal Preservation Society. This priceless legacy of the early transport system in Wales was state of the art technology during the 1780's.

The lower section of the Neath Canal, from Neath to Clyne, is now "in water" and the Neath and Tennant Canals Trust vessel "Thomas Dadford", a 12 seat canal trip boat, can now cruise from Neath town centre to Abergarwed using the restored locks and the new aqueduct at Ynysbwllog.

Hiya Kendall, I too lived near the canal in High street, and the fairfield and the canal were the two important playing places. I well remember the tramp who used to bath in the canal down below Penydre, the kids used to throw his soap into the canal, but he fooled them as the soap was floating soap!! September fair time was unforgettable, when we used to watch the rides and sideshows being assembled. The Tennant canal was also very interesting too as it flowed its way to Neath Abbey. So many happy memories of childhood in Neath andb Alderman Davies' school, which Katherine Jenkins also attended.

Having seen the picture of the canal brought memories to mind of the time when I spent my early days around and about the canal. I lived in Mac worth Lane not a stone throw away from the canal, in fact just where the working mens club now stands. My memory is this I just happened to come across an unexploded incendary bomb. To me I was five at the time it was as large as big berthas shell it was just by Dia alleys that special place where we all learnt to swim and play with Sally Rubarb boats maybe some of you may remember. Well why the canal just happened to be drained that day I have now recolection what for, me it was off with thumping heart pass foner rag and bottle yard pass st marys church across the x road by burtons the tailor and onto the police station to report my bomb and show the consable my find. How proud I was telling my mam and dad it was not long after that we went to live in the Cimla I was just around five at the time what price freedom and inocence.

I lived at No 20 Canal Bank (now side) Aberdulais and swam in the canal the basin as well as the Dulais and Neath Rivers - coal dust and all. Fishing for eal and chub, dabs at high tide by Stanfords bakery where I worked, that was in 1947 to 1950. Wonderful memories of sunny summers, there was also the canal houses being flooded getting up in the morning with a foot of water in the kitchen. Aberdulais was at one time in the record books as the Village of Bridges, it had more bridges than anywhere else in the U K.

Well what can I say this brings back a lot of memories for me, as a child I lived in the Cimla my mother and father are still living there to this day. As a child I used to play and go fishing along the banks of the canal, I spent many an hour down on the canal. In them days my mum did'nt have to worry where I was, not like today. Don't times change, anyway what great pictures of the canel, nice to see it back to working order, keep the pics coming.

The photographs brought back happy childhood memories, I spent most of mine exploring the Pontnewydd-Pontypool Canal. Great pictures and commentary.
