At the end of the Second World War many celebrations were held. This photo was brought in by Sissy Thomas - it shows Tom Swan who dressed up for the VE Day Carnival in Pontarddulais on May 8 1945. The bra that he wore was made out of tin and the group remarked on how uncomfortable it was for Tom to wear.

Margaret Eaton-Davies

My maiden name was Margaret Owen and I was the daughter of Tommy and Eluned Owen who lived in Water Street. I had a twin sister called Maureen and an older brother John who left Pontardulais at a very young age to go to the Foreign Office in London. After many years working abroad for the Foreign Office his last post was as a Governor of the Cayman Islands. He is now retired and living in the Isle of Wight.

I now live in Caerphilly as I left Pontardulais when I was 22-years-old to get married but although all my family have now passed away I still have many old friends there especially those who still go to Carmel Apostolic Church in Water Street where we attended when I was a child.

I love going back to the Bont and seeing the house where I was born as it is so nostalgic.

I always remember my Dad was very fearful of the river in front of our house as it had overflown a nunber of times while we lived there. Some people may know my Dad as Tommy the Co op as he worked as a grocery van driver for the Co op in the Bont for many years. There is nothing like going back to your old roots.

I have not lived in the Bont for 40 or more years and came upon this site by accident - I have found it to be most informative and it all brings back wonderful memories of my childhood.

Christine Aubert, Cape Town, South Africa
I believe my grandfather, Harry Aubert came from Pontardulais. He was born in 1900 and was the eldest of nine children. His father relocated the family to Canada but when he died they returned to Wales. I'd like to know if anyone remembers the name and whether there are any relatives still living in the area?

Glennroy Jones ex Dantwyn - Perth Australia
What a shock! In No.2 photo on the left is my mother Phillis Jones ex Ty Rwsh and Dantwyn, taken before I was born. She is 91 this year and now lives with my sister Nan and brother-in-law Meirion Williams(ex Ralph's DIY in the Bont & who found this photo for me)in Karratha Western Australia. She visits my brother Raymond (Twmbo) and I in Perth every year. On the right is Ior (Noah) Harris also ex Dantwyn, who coincidently also lived until his recent passing a few years ago in Perth Western Australia. Can anyone tell me who the 2 in the centre & dressed up are?

I am sad to hear about 'Flwsh' or Idris as I also knew him has passed away to pastures new. It is an end of a piece of history in the chapters of Pontarddulais.
He was someone I associated with the Bont and there was many tales and fables relating to him. One I remember and still chuckle about was when Flwsh was found listless on the pavement outside the Bebell Chapel. Rumour control said he was dead, an ambulance was called people gathered, the ambulance turned up. The driver got out took one look chucked a blanket over him said "he's drunk" got back in the ambulence and drove off.
Flwsh apparently made a habit of getting drunk, collapsing getting picked up by the ambulence service so he could got a bed for the night and a free meal. Eventually the ambulence service would turn up slowly approach, see who it was and drive off.
God Bless You Idris, Stop wandering God's Land and Rest in Peace.
