Dolaucothi Goldmines

Last updated: 01 December 2006

During autumn 2006 the BBC Wales Bus visited The National Trust's Dolaucothi Goldmines in Carmarthenshire. This area was first mined by the Romans who constructed a fort in Pumsaint. Small-scale mining resumed in 1853 and it increased in scale until 1912, when the complex geology of the site brought an end to work there. Gold was last mined at Dolaucothi between 1933 and 1938. The mineyard as it appears today, is a reconstruction of the 1930's period.

Ian, the long underground tour is not suitable for wheelchairs due to the large amount of steps, you can checkout more info on the nationaltrust web site www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Paul: your grandmother is telling you the truth with regards to her wedding ring, Welsh gold does have a red tinge to it, also the royal family all have Welsh gold in their wedding rings. Even though gold is no longer mined in Wales the royal family have been given an amount to keep making thier wedding rings. Hope the above helps both of you.

Paul Mainwaring in Australia.
My grandmother claimed that her wedding ring was made from Welsh gold and so was the Queens? She married around 1910 so it was more that likely true...the ring had a red tinge to it, would anybody have any imput on this?
