Cymmer Carnival - a trip through time

Last updated: 09 August 2006

Take a step back in time with this collection of carnival photographs, which form just a small part of the Upper Afan Valley Local History Exhibition in Cymmer.

Carnivals were very much part of life in South Wales and the Upper Afan Valley was no exception. Many of the small villages and towns found here held a summer time carnival - and this was an event that all community members joined in. The first carnivals were held in the early 1900's. Today there are no carnivals in the Upper Afan Valley, they finished some ten years ago.

If you enjoyed this slideshow, take a look at our Coal Mining in the Afan Valley Gallery, capturing shots taken over several decades.

If you'd like to view over 6,000 photographs from the Afan Valley, the exhibition these pictures are taken from is housed in Bethania Chapel, Cymmer. It's open on Saturdays from 1 pm to 6 pm and during the week by prior arrangement. For more details, contact David Teague (01639) 850552.

Take a look at a project which commerates the industrial past of the Afan Valley - Sculpture Trail Slideshow.

My mother was born in Railway Crescent, Mary Margaret Morgan one of eight. I was born in Thornaby, now Teesside, in 1955 the last of four sons. It's been great looking at these photos and I think one of the bands were marching along Railway Crescent (?) with the high walls and the houses on top.

I think my mother was born in around 1921 and met my dad during the 2nd world war at Richmond Barracks North Yorks.

Quality photos, love to to know who some of the people are and if they still live in any of the three areas? I took part in the Cymmer carnivals on the back of the floats. Happy days. Anyone got any photos of that get them on here ha! And Liam Jones is right it's sad to say there should be more in Abercragan for everybody!

I would like to respond to a comment Marlene Hopkins made in this forum about being born in Cymmer in 1938, as my mothers maiden name was Mary Eileen Hopkins and she was born in Nantybar, Cymmer, in 1924 so I was thinking it is possible they were related in some way...

I'm currently involved in tracing my family tree. I know they lived at Abercregan and also Nantybar (now demolished.) It is lovely to see some old pictures of Abercregan carnival. My family lived in 'The Stank' (also demolished) for many years. I would love to know why it was so called, so if anyone out there knows?

Mervyn Thomas (The Stank), Abercregan
I can remember in 1946 a girl named Sonia Hussey was the carnival queen. I was 11 at the time and won my section dressed as a Russian Cossack. Mrs Davies, Alban Terrace won overall dressed as General Montgomery and the best band was the Abercregan Rajahs. Kenny Jones my cousin was Sugar Ray Robinson. Every summer I have taken my children and grandchildren, picnicing at the waterfall in Cregan it brings back the fondness of memories to me.

My father (David) was a washery foreman at the Duffryn Rhondda collery for many years, and I worked in the Duffryn Collery office for 8 years.

I remember those carnivals and the distances we used to march, right round the village. It's a shame there are no pictures of the village band. But what memories.

Ken Finnemore from Abercregan
Born Abercregan 1947, now live in Cymmer - two sister's still live there. I remember the carnivals well, as kids we would all meet at Lock's shop and dress in giant washing powder boxes, then march to Cymmer, then back to the coke field for the judging of the floats. Wonderful memories.

Surfing the web and found this site. Picture 10 shows my grandparents house, the square bay window to the left of the picture. This home stayed in the family until sadly my uncle passed away in the 70s. My grandfather lost his life with the coal miner's disease in February 1954. I spent many happy summer holidays there, but alas I was born in December 1952 and was too small to join the carnival!
