Sporting Life in the Afan Valley

Last updated: 30 November 2006

Sport is an important part of most communities. Here we take a look at the various teams that were seen in the Afan Valley, sadly many of these have now disbanded and all that remains are these black and white photographs.

Andrew Jones sent in this photo of his father Mike Jones (left of picture) and his brother Keith who were both capped at Amateur Football for Wales in the 1960's. He has this to say, "They both hail from Blaengwynfi and this photograph was found in a house clearance in Ton Pentre where somebody recognised Keith from his playing days with Ton Pentre and brought the photo over to Blaengwynfi. Unfortunately my father died a few months prior to the photo being found and Keith does not remember having it taken so it is still a bit of a mystery". Can you help Andrew?

If you enjoyed this slideshow, take a look at our Coal Mining in the Afan Valley Gallery, capturing shots taken over several decades.

If you'd like to view over 6,000 photographs from the Afan Valley, the exhibition these pictures are taken from is housed in Bethania Chapel, Cymmer. It's open on Saturdays from 1 pm to 6 pm and during the week by prior arrangement. For more details, contact David Teague (01639) 850552.

Take a look at a project which commerates the industrial past of the Afan Valley - Sculpture Trail Slideshow.

Hi Andrew, just found this site and thought that I must reply because it brought back good memories. As you know I played football with your Dad for years,he was a great player but was also a great man. He used to be one of the highlights of coming back to the Cape for the weekend knowing I could catch a beer with him at the Social.Give your Mam our love from Phil and Jackie.See you soon.Phil

Thanks for the kind words Les. Keith is currently living in Maroubra on the outskirts of Sydney. My Mother is Maureen Jones, i'll show her this site and ask if she remembers you.

Andrew, I was in the same class as your Dad in Cymmer school, I'm afraid that I don't know the photo but I remember your Dad was very sports oriented and a real good bloke. I was very sorry to hear that he went so unexpectantly. The picture is exactly as I remember him.
